Keeping your Cavy Healthy & Happy

There a a few basic rules to keeping your cavy happy & healthy..

  • The obvious Feed your cavy twice daily, & give them variety.
  • Fresh water daily

EG: We give our cavies different things each meal time..

    DAYBREAKFASTDINNER
    MONDAYSTUD MIXLUCERNE CHAFF
    TUESDAYPELLETSROLLED OATS & CHAFF
    WEDNESDAYCHAFF WITH WHEAT GERMSTUD MIX

    YOU GET THE GENERAL IDEA

With their morning feed they have carrots as well..
Their Evenving meal they are given grass..
If grass is unavailable we give them greens from the grocery store..

  • Bathing to keep mites at bay..
A good practice to get yourself into is to dip your cavy monthly..Mites can come in on mice..
  • If your cavy shows signs of scratching or hair loss this is a good sign of mite..
  • We use either Malathion or Fido's free itch.. if the wheather is cold we use Pestene powder..brush through the coat & leave..The only problem with this way is if you breed & show white cavies, The powder discolours the coat...It will wash out ,but if you intend showing the cavy don't powder them a week before a show..
  • We also use a internal control called Ivomectin..you give your cavy 1 drop to the tongue when needed..

  • Also clip the nails monthly..we do this after dipping,so the whole beauty treatment is all done in one day..

  • A daily check when you feed is also good practice..You soon know each cavy as an individual..They each have their own unique personalities..So it becomes easy to detect an unwell cavy..
I have a rex sow who has scared me on a number of occassions..She sleeps so heavily you can pick her up & she slowly opens her eyes has a look & curls back up like a possum..(I have often thought she had passed on)
