A Journey Starts

Seventy-four years have not dimmed the memory of the time my search began.

I was a few months past my twelfth birthday and had just been given a new pair of low cut, white, tennis shoes.
I was proud of those shoes. Wearing them made me feel "bouncy."
So I was "bouncing" down the driveway next to my home enjoying my strut. It was a great feeling.
As I cast an admiring glance at those new white "tennies" the scene changed. Abruptly.

Gone were my new shoes. On my feet where leather sandals.
My shirt and corduroys had become a light colored robe or cloak.
The concrete was now warm dry sand.
I was not alone.
I sensed that I was in the midst of a crowd of people
dressed in a fashion similar to mine and we were hurrying toward someone.
My subconscious told me that it was the one called the Messiah, the Master Jesus.

Just as suddenly I was back on the concrete. Back in the shirt and "cords." Back in those new canvas shoes.
I probably took no more than one or two steps during the flashback, if that's what it was.

Even at the age of twelve I knew by instinct what the vision meant. In this life I must follow his teachings.
I've been trying to do that in all the years since.

Coming to grips with how to "follow" the Master has presented numerous challenges.
Like all humankind I have, on many occasions, wandered away from the trail stumbling over the boulders and kicking against the thorns.
The path has not been easy. The pitfalls, detours and sliding back, have been countless.
There have been many lessons. Some quite difficult.
The journey is not yet ended, but the path has become less confused.
I kept this "vision" to myself for many years.
As I grew older the memory of it came to mind quite often but I dismissed that episode as childhood day dreaming.
The first person ever to hear of this event was my wife Judith. I told her in the '70s, after we had been married several years.
Since that time I've come to realize that this was more than dreaming, it was a real experience, one I would like to pass on.
Please keep in mind this narrative is the story of one persons start on their path, not necessarily a guideline for everyone.
