The Chicken Had to Die
(sang to the tune of "Earl Had to Die")
words written by Les and Dawn, Leland and Crystal Castor
for Grandma's 90th Birthday
July 21, 2001

Leecy and Jack were the best of friends, back in the depression years.
Worked their fingers to the bone, there were happy times, there were tears.
Through it all this family stuck together in the good times and the bad.
Now were sitting in this place together looking back on all the fun we had.

Right away we thought of the times we had, out on Grandma's farm
She had cows and cats and a few big rats, but we always knew she had a strong arm.

Because the chickens had to die.  Goodbye---Chicken!
He'll never peck, cause she grabbed him by the neck!
So she waited till the last kid got in, grabbed a chicken in a flash,
Got an evil grin across her face, then James did the fifty yard dash.

Then the blood started squirtin' and the kids started blirtin' words we never had heard.
James started dancin' because the bird started prancin'..
He'd never seen a headless bird.

The chicken just died.  Goodbye---chicken!
Take a walk, I think it was a cock---bird!

Then Grandma plucked that bird and got him ready to roll him in some flour.
Then she walked to the back door and yelled at us kids----
FRIED CHICKEN IN AN HOUR!

So she fried that chicken, mashed some taters, made gravy and green beans.
She set that table with all that food---It was a feast like you never had seen!

Right away the country cousins poured in by the dozens
while the city kids shied away.
They said, "The chicken was our friend,
we loved him 'till the end,
so we'll have a bologna sandwich today."

Cause we saw the chicken die, we're gonna cry, chicken
We're havin' lunch  (BREAK)
The whole darn bunch.
It's finger licken good.
The way we knew that it would!

The Chicken had to fry!
