Similar stories about phantom creatures exist in other parts of the world. One of the best known accounts was in the detective novel by Sir Authur Conan Doyle "The Hound of the Baskervilles", which pitted the hero Sherlock Holmes against a monsterous phantom dog. Doyle based his monster on stories he had collected from the English country side about similar beasts which haunted the area.
