In 1538 a Royal injunction ordered that clergy should keep registers of Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, this was further enforced in 1597 by the archbishop of Canterbury ordering that there should be proper parchment register books and specifying how they should be conserved. These registers are often known as Old Parish Registers

The general pattern for burials in Leicestershire is, until the middle of the 1800s, most people were buried in the graveyard surrounding their parish church. When that became full most parishes opened a public cemetery which is still in use today. The main cemetery for the City of Leicester is on Welford Road. Cremation was much less common until more recent times.
Some gravestones have been transcribed and these transcripts can be made available for viewing at your nearest Mormon family history center.
