However, the shock here is that it's not entirely a nihilistic portrait of youth as the moral guardians who railed against the picture in 1982 might have asserted. Tam's youths are discontented to be sure but their discontent is a symptom of adult society's hypocrisy and neglect, and its non-recognition that youth itself is a legitimate "society." Nomad ends in violence perpetrated on the youths by outsiders, a sign of betrayal of youth by the wider world.
