Greymatter

This tutorial teaches you how to install Greymatter. You need a hosted site or domain that supports CGI. If you are hosted, as your host! You also need to know how to CHMOD. Credit goes to Jenny!

  • Firstly, download this file: greymatter.zip
  • Unzip all the contents from that file to a folder. (Make sure you remember what the folder is!)
  • In ASCII mode, upload all the files except installation.html and manual.html. (Upload gm-icon.gif, but not in ASCII mode)
  • CHMOD gm.cgi, gm-karma.cgi, gm-upload.cgi, and gm-comments.cgi to 755.
  • CHMOD the rest of the files to 666. Be sure to CHMOD index.html as well!
  • Create a new directory and name it archives. CHMOD that to 777.

  • To login to your greymatter, use one of the following URLS to:

    http://www.DOMAIN.com/YOU/cgi-bin/gm.cgi
    http://www.DOMAIN.com/cgi-bin/YOU/gm.cgi
    http://www.DOMAIN.com/YOU/gm.cgi
    http://cgi.DOMAIN.com/YOU/gm.cgi

  • Just follow the directory to where your Greymatter is located. Whatever it takes to find gm.cgi. Be sure to include the folder (if you made one)!
  • Once you get to the login page, the username is Alice and the password is wonderland. Make sure that Alice has a CAPITAL in the beginning!
  • Press Enter, and you will be taken to the menu.
  • Find Edit Authors, and click that.
  • On the top, it shows the author and they information. Click on the circle under Select, and then click Edit Selected Author.
  • You will be taken to a screen. For all the choices, make sure they are all checked a "yes".
  • Edit the information to what applies to you.
  • Once you are done editing, scroll down and click Save Changes to This Author.
  • You might want to write down your new username and password so you don't forget.

  • Now that you are done editing your info, return to the main menu and click Configuration.
  • Change the settings to your satisfication, and to what applies to it.
  • When you are done that, go back to the main menu and click Edit Templates. Here, you will get a chance to edit the look of your gm so that it fits your layout.
  • Edit all the templates. When you are done, go to the main menu and click rebuild files.
  • Then click rebuild everything.
  • You are done! If you want to add an entry, go to the main menu and click the long green button that says "Add A New Entry". This is where you will always go to add an entry.
  • Keep in mind that when you put gm on your site that it is much more easier to put it in an iframe!
  • That's it, you are DONE! If you had any troubles..questions...comments, whatever..go to the tutorials menu on my site and fill out the form!
