Career Orientation Lesson - Grades 7 & 8

Objective >
  • By the end of this lesson, students will have analyzed the effect of their personal interest and apptitudes upon educational and career planning. They will aslo have researched and published on the Internet their findings of a career choice they are considering for their future with the intent to create a Career resource site for others.



Computer >
Function 
  • Utilize interest evaluation tools on the Internet to identify skills and carreer interest.
  • Wordprocessing will be used to record findings about their interest.
  • Search engines will be used to access databases inorder to gather information about a specific carreer.
  • Wordprocessing will be used to input information into either PowerPoint or a wysiwyg editor that will be saved in html format.


  • Problem >
    • Interest and skills are closely related -- what you are skilled at you are more likely to be interested in. What you are interested in, you are more likely to become skilled at. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" 



    Data >
    Manipulation 
    • Students will use Wordprocessing to write a 2-3 page paper detailing what they found out about themselves from the interest evaluation tools. 
    • Research one career, gathering information from 4-5 sources off the Internet.
    • Publish information about one career to the Internet 

    Results >
    Presentations


     

    • The final product will be a webpage created from Powerpoint or another wysiwyg program detailing information about a specific career.

    Activities >
    At Computer 


     

    • Based on their findings they will use Wordprocessing to write a 2-3 page paper detailing what they found out about themselves. They will compare how their findings were or were not characteristic of them.
    • Use the Search Engines or the following links to research different careers that match your interest. 
    • Narrow the Search to one career.
    • Gather required information about the career.
    • Enter information into PowerPoint or WSYIWYG editor
    • Enter appropriate graphics
    • Enter appropriate links
    • Include a hyperlinked Bibliography
    • Save  work as an html document
    • Publish the webpage to the Internet

    Prior Computer
    • Students will form discussion groups to talk about different types of careers that they are already familar with.
    • Discuss how to use the Career Interest Evaluation Tools
    • Review items to research once the career choice is narrowed down.

    Education needed for promotion after being on the job (future education needed) Job outlook for the future
    Salary range Reason for selecting this career

    Type of work situation: alone, group, team :)
    • Sign up for a Geocities Account
    • Practice using the File Manager and previewing a webpage
    • If applicable practice using the built-in templates to create a webpage.

    • Present Webpage to the class/audience
    • Discuss similarities/differences between jobs vs. careers
    • Students meet in small groups to discuss Think Sheet questions.

    • Use the "Ask an Expert Sites"  to locate an expert in a career field. Contact them via email and request more information about their career.

    • Use a spreadsheet to create a graph of the salaries of their careers choices.
