TOURIST INFORMATION

Le Mura di Sotto is well placed for exploring Tuscany. 10 minutes walk away along a shepherds path youll find Benabbio, our village. The main church Santa Maria Assunta has a remarkable triptych and two wooden 14th century statues. Romanesque arches and stonewalls reveal its mediaeval origin. If you walk to the top of the village youll find the remains of a castle built by a local warlord Lupo Lupari in the XII century.
There is a village summer club where you will be made welcomed. A small playground is situated by the club. If you walk down past the club, out of the village, you will find an old mill in the woods. Benabbio has two buses a day to Bagni di Lucca town. There is a train station in Fornoli, three miles away.
Bagni di Lucca has been a popular spa since the XI century. The British have been very closely associated with Bagni and it was an important stop on the Grand Tour. Significant visitors include the poets Byron, Shelley and the Brownings. Other regular guests were the poets and winners of the Nobel Prize for literature Carducci and Montale; writers like Dumas, Heine and Montaigne; musicians like Strauss, Listz, Paganini and Puccini, and Popes, politicians and regents. Napoleons sister Elisa Baciocchi married the Grand Duke of Lucca and had her summer palace in Bagni di Lucca. A couple of generation later, Napoleon III stayed in a little retreat few yards away from Le Mura di Sotto. Testimony of this prestigious 18th century tradition still remains: the Anglican Church, the neo-classical temple and Villa Demidoff (where you can have spa treatments), numerous other beautiful villas and also the first Casino in Europe. The public swimming pool uses the thermal waters. There are also tennis courts, bars, restaurants and a supermarket. The river has splash pools for a dip in the clear pure mountain waters. The surrounding hills are full of beautiful villages, particularly San Cassiano di Controne with a stunning Romanesque Church, Montefegatesi, a hilltop village with a dramatic gorge nearby, Lucchio a village perched on the steep side of a hill with the ruins of a fortress commanding the most spectacular view over wooded valleys. The countryside is also full of wonderful walks.
