Here is Elton, my sweet (neutered) field-bred English Springer.
At first, Elton seemed very small after having our pair of large bench-bred boys
(Kodi & Kyle) for 13 years. However, no matter their differences on the outside,
they're all Springers on the inside!
Did you know that cardboard is a wonderful treasure to gallop through the house with
and spend hours gnawing on? Well, we didn't either til Elton came along! And who can forget
the late evening zooms? A small chocolate blurr tearing through the house at breakneck speed with
no regard for furniture, or people, in his path! Another unusual amusement for Elton as a pup
was the telephone directory. It was very cute until every room had piles of shredded
yellow pages on the floor!
Elton & I soon discovered what toys withstood a very oral-fixated young Springer, as well
as which didn't! His favorite toy quickly became the Kong. Although my little boy enjoyed squeak
toys & fleece toys they suffered quick deaths within 5-10 minutes and were of little amusement afterwards. Elton's other favorite toys included Nylabone products: chocolate-flavor Nylabone,
Galileo Bone, and Plaque Attacker.
Why Elton? I wanted an English name completely different from Kodi or Kyle.
My brother suggested Reginald. I wasn't thrilled with the name, however.... It was 1995,
and Elton John had recently received an Acadamy Award for The Lion King, Reginald is
Elton John's birth name, so my pup was named Elton! The Cadbury part was originally
because of his color. It was just before Easter, and Cadbury chocolate came to mind.
When Elton's vet saw him the first time, she said "Oh, he's almost completely chocolate"!
I later learned that Cornwall Castle from the Camelot-era of England was formerly
known as Cadbury Castle. So that part of Elton's name became even more fitting
of an English Springer Spaniel later on!
Elton joined our family 03/28/95 at 8 weeks of age. I fell in love with him instantly!
