Journal topics are written with values in mind. The collections
are community based and address values.
Rationale
Journal topics and requirements
often expect the student to take a side and to defend their stand. The
journals are often based on community events, news stories, and other
current topics. Students are also encouraged to reflect on their lives.
The class collections are usually
for children who are in need. This is a value that I feel is necessary
for all to have. The students need to understand that there are those
that need help and they are responsible for finding a way to help.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
There are other community based projects that the students
could do. I need to continue those that we do, but find ways to add
others. There is a homeless shelter near here that needs odd socks,
hotel shampoos and other items that could be collected throughout the
year.
