William Hill was born about 1819 but because of conflicting information in the Madison County Census records from 1840 1860 the place of birth is hard to determine. The records indicate either Illinois or Tennessee.  He was married to Lucinda Tucker sometime before 1838.

Lucida Tucker was born to William Tucker & Anna James Tucker anywhere from 1822 to 1827 either in Tennessee or Alabama. The 1850, 1860, & 1880 Census states Tenn. The 1870 Census states she was born in Alabama. I believe that she was born in Tennessee because her parents were married in Blount County, Tennessee on February 6, 1820 by Samuel Douthit, MG.

It is unknown exactly when William & Lucinda moved to Madison County Arkansas or where they moved from. In 1849 they bought 40 acres of  land in Madison County, Hillburn Township 14, Range 27 West.  This land was sold July 13th, 1853 the family moved to Granby, Newton County, Missouri.  They had two children while living in Missouri and then in 1859 they moved back to Madison County, Arkansas.  When they returned to Arkansas they purchased land from Robert Tucker in Township #13 range 27.  In the 1860 Madison County census the family is living in Valley Township.  The children of William and Lucinda are as follows:

1. Sarah Ann Hill born abt. 1838/1839. She married (1) Sammuel Shastid on April 11th 1867 (2) William West marriage date unknown
2. William Hill Shown in the 1850 Madison County Census as being age 10 but it not listed in the 1860 Madison County Census. It is assumed that he died between 1850 & 1860 since he can not be found.
3. Martha Hill born about 1840 in Arkansas married Elijah Creech
4. Archibald B. Hill born February 15, 1847 in Arkansas died November 8, 1926 in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and is buried at Gideon Cemetery in Cherokee Co., Oklahoma.  He married Rhoda Jane Salyer.
5. Melvina Hill Born December 17, 1850 in Madison County, Arkansas. She married James K. (Polk) Creech.
6. Wiley Anderson Hill born in March 1852 in Arkansas.  He married Leannie (Leanner) Creech.
7. Henry Howard Hill- born August 28, 1854 (possibly 1855) in Granby, Mo and died May 27, 1937 in Crawford County, Arkansas.  He married Nancy Ann Smith on October 2, 1885 in Patrick, Madison County Arkansas.
8. Cassandra (Cass)  Lucinda Hill born about 1858 in Granby, Mo. She married Luther Elvington. She died between 1885-1886.
9. Nancy Paralee Hill born June 16, 1861 in Yale, Johnson County., Arkansas.
10. Lafayette Hill born March 16, 1862 in Madison County, Arkansas.  He married Nancy Ellen LeMaster on May 10, 1886. He died March 16, 1917 in Madison County, Arkansas.

William Hill joined the Confederate Army and served in the 1st Battalion (Stirmans) Arkansas Cavalry, Brooks Cavalry. At the time that Pvt. Hill was captured his unit was assigned to 2nd (Selmons Crawfords ) Cavalry Brigade, Arkansas (Fagans) Cavalry Division, Prices Cavalry Corps, Trans-Mississippi Department (September 1864-May 1865). William was wounded and captured at Fayetteville, Arkansas on November 4, 1864. Family lore says that he was first taken to a Hotel in Fayetteville and word was sent to Lucinda about his capture. She was allowed to visit him one last time and bring him clothing. Military records show he was first taken to Gratiot Street Military Prison in St. Louis.  He was there for five days then was received at Military Prison in Alton, ILL. On December 7, 1864.
William contracted Erysipelas (*Erysipelas:  An acute infectious disease of the skin or mucous membranes caused by several kinds of streptococcus and characterized by local inflammation and fever.)  William was admitted to the hospital January 21, 1865 and died January 30, 1865. It is assumed this was a hospital at the prison.

Times were hard for Lucinda during the war and especially after Williams death.  After the war the railroad was coming through Madison County for the lumber trade. Lucinda took in borders to make ends meet.  These men were usually railroad workers.

Lucinda applies for military pension December 5, 1891 due to Rheumatism. This was followed up with a letter from her son, Archibald on May 23, 1892.

Letter:
State of Arkansas County of Madison
Personally appeared before me a notary public in and for said county and sate aforesaid Archibald B. Hill of Tahlequah Indian Territory son of William P. Hill deceased and under oath state that he was present and went in to the same company with his father Co-B (?) 16 Arkansas Cavalry if his memory serves him right but is not certain as to letter of company it was in the fall of 1864 October he thinks when they was recruited by Capt. William Lawson in the confederate service and went with his father to two miles North of Fayetteville Washington Co. Ark where they came to the regiment in command of Col. Brooks and was in one skirmish first with the federals at Fayetteville and then was sent on scout duty under command of Lt. John Garrett and did not rejoin my command until we met at Greenville on Red River in Arkansas and I then learned my father William P. Hill was wounded at Fayetteville and taken prisoner and sent north after the war I saw John Frost of (?)  he told me the last he saw of my father was in Alton Prison Illinois he was sick and died there.  I have no interest in the claim of my mothers pension father than to see that justice is done here I am forty five years old and have a family of my own and I know of my own knowledge that my father was a confederate solider of the 16th Arkansas C.S.A.

This letter was filed on July 25, 1892 as proof of service and the pension was approved August 15, 1892 . Lucinda received $25.00 for his pension. It should be noted that Archibald told relatives that at the time he learned of his fathers death he left his unit and returned home to help care for his mother and family.
On June 17, 1893 Lucinda appeared in court and was granted property that she had homesteaded on June 24, 1878. This 80 acres was located on the southwest quarter in Town ship 13 range 27.
It is not know when Lucinda died or where she is buried. It is assumed that she died between 1893 & 1900 as she is not listed in the 1900 Madison County Census.
