Tiandra Ponteen's Profile
24/04   SEC Women's Freshman Indoor Runner of the Year - iandra Ponteen, Florida

The Southeastern Conference announced its Indoor track and field awards, and the University of Florida was well represented.
Freshmen Tiandra Ponteen were honored (amongst others) for their accomplishments.  Ponteen was the NCAA runner-up in the 400m dash at the NCAA Championship, finishing in 51.23. That time set the school record and is the fastest time ever by a freshman at the NCAA Indoor meet. Ponteen set the school record in the 400m dash twice during the indoor season. Ponteen was also the leadoff leg of the school-record setting 4x400m relay at the SEC Indoor Championship.
12&13/03 - NCAA Indoor Championships

TIANDRA PONTEEN of St. Kitts and the University of Florida, won a SILVER MEDAL at the NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, and in the process set a new National Record, breaking the 13-year-old mark set by Diane Dunrod of 51.29s in 1991.  Tiandra re-established the 400m record of 51.23s for her school and also attained the OLYMPIC GAMES "A" standard of 51.50s. Tiandra has also earned her first ALL-AMERICA honor of her career, as a Freshman.  She also competed in the 4x400m relay (Tiandra Ponteen, Kamille Bratton, Andrea Bliss, Novlene Williams), placing fifth in 3min 32.32s.

In terms of her 400m time and based on the latest rankings, Tiandra would now be ranked:
#2 in the South Eastern Conference (SEC )
   - the only athlete with a better time is Hazel Ann Regis, a Junior at LSU with a time of 51.13 on 29/2
#3 for NCAA Indoors (All Divisions)
#6 in the World rankings (based on March 8th).

Based on her performance, Tiandra could be a finalist in the 400m at the Athens Olympic Games, but the Outdoor season has just started and everyone will be aiming for that final 8 and a possible Olympic medal.   CONGRATULATIONS TO TIANDRA from N.A.A.A. & L.I.A.A.

13/02/04  Tyson Invitational Meet, University of Arkansas

Tiandra Ponteen of St. Kitts and a freshman at the University of Florida, won the 400m in a scorching 52.20s, the 5th best time in the World and a new National record.  The time also qualifies her for the World Indoor Championship, to be held in Hungary in March.  Tiandra's time set a new record for the University of Florida by some 0.21s and was an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Indoor Championships scheduled for March 12-13.

Tiandra also attained the 'B' Standard for the 400m for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.   Tiandra is the second female athlete to qualify for the Olympic Games.   Diane Dunrod-Francis was the first qualifier from St. Kitts & Nevis.

Tiandra also placed 6th overall in the 200m  and in the process ran the 16th best time in the World in 23.57s, and a new Personal Best and a new National Record (to be confirmed).  That time moved her into 5th best time ever in the school's history. (World rankings based on IAAF  list from last weekend)

These Indoor results (only her 5th as a freshman) suggests that Tiandra could be a finalist (and possibly a medallist), not only for the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championship, but also for the Summer Olympic Games, if her season progresses smoothly.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Tiandra Ponteen, Kamille Bratton, Andrea Bliss and Novlene Williams finished second in the collegiate invitational race, clocking in at 3:33.90 - the third fastest time in school history. That time is an automatic qualifier and bettered their best mark of the season by almost three seconds.

Arkansas served as the host for one of the biggest meets on the indoor track and field scene with Friday featuring top collegiate athletes from around the country (close to 50 schools), while Saturdays events will have some of the worlds best professional athletes.
