C-47 Transport plane

The next step up from the faithful DC-3, the C-47 was the workhorse of the allied supply and transport armadas. Used in all theaters (this one is in the Pacific) it could do a variety of tasks including, dropping Paratroops, towing Gliders, air dropping supplies, evacuating wounded, etc. During the Buna-Gona campaign of 1942, these aircraft were the only means of getting supplies to the allied forces, flying from 4-mile strip at Port Moresby over the Owen Stanley mountains, these planes and their brave crews ( the aircraft was not armed) kept the allied forces supplied with everything they needed. Used extensively in Italy as well as other theaters, the aircraft later became well known for being the backbone of the air fleet that kept Berlin supplied during the 'Berlin airlift' while the Russians blockaded that city after the war.
