// The 'Cyclopedia of New Zealand' was a commercial venture at the turn of the century, which offered people the opportunity to have their biographical details recorded for posterity. As one had to pay for the privilege, entries are predominately of those who had prospered in their colonial careers. The Cyclopedia is illustrated with photographs of people and places featured in the text. There were six volumes published, each one covering a particular area.

Can be found on various library shelves around NZ.

"Cyclopedia of New Zealand" Otago Volume p 813 // A copy of a photo of John Forrester (settler), with text as follows:-

Mr John Forrester, storekeeper in the Locomotive Department, of the Invercargill Railway Station, was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland, on 28th Feb, 1854. He was educated in the parish of Calder and had seventeen years as a coal and iron miner before coming to Port Chalmers, by the ship "Wellington" in 1879. Shortly afterwards Mr Forrester entered the railway service at Invercargill, and has had considerable experience as an engine driver, and in connection with machinery, so that in addition to taking charge of the stores, he attends to the stationary engine on the works and keeps the machinery in order. As a Freemason he is a Past Master in Lodge St.John, New Zealand Constitution, and is also a member of the Pioneer Lodge at Oddfellows. Mr Forrester was married, in 1874 to a daughter of the late Mr George Silman, of Glasgow, and has had six sons and three daughters, of whom two sons have died. // His death certificate shows he died in Sydney, in 1930, at age 75. He was returning from a trip to Scotland on the steamship 'Hobsons Bay' & developed heart problems. He died in Sydney, Australia, and is buried in Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney. His wife Margaret is buried in Invercargill, NZ.

CELBRATING HER 101st

At 101 years of age Mrs. Leah Forrester, of Dunedin, "couldn't be better".
Today is her birthday, but yesterday she was already gleefully receiving birthday cards
from some of her many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren .
Today at Belhaven Rest Home, in Mornington, she will have an afternoon-tea celebration
with some of her family, according to her daughter, Mrs. Mavis Collie.
Born in 1889, Mrs. Forrester was the daughter of a shop keeper in the Southland town of
Waianiwa which was built because of the timber-milling industry.
She remembers horses and carts transporting the logs out of the forest to the timber mill
and lovely bushy areas around the the town.
She had five sisters and brothers and "out-lived them all".
"I never thought about being 101...never thought I would get this far," she said.
Sometimes Mrs. Forrester thinks hard about her history and can still rattle off the names
of places and people she has known.
As well as her memory, she still retains her lively sense of humour, to which Mrs, Collie
can well testify.
"She reads different things into normal every-day activities and never gets depressed."
At 101 she was still perfectly happy and healthy, Mrs. Collie said.

Obituary O.D.T. 2 1 91 //(article appeared with 1 photo)

        MRS. LEAH FORRESTER
Mrs. Leah Forrester, who celebrated her 101st birthday in July, has died in Dunedin.
Mrs. Forrester (nee Murdoch) was one of a family of five children born and raised in
Invercargill.
She worked in the telephone exchange section of the Invercargill Post Office where, as
part of her duties, she typed bereavement notices to New Zealand families during World War 1.
She resigned from her job in 1919 to marry Mr. Robert Forrester, of Waianiwa.
They had three children, Mavis, Gordon and Ian.
In 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Forrester shifted to Dunedun, where they remained for the rest of
their lives.
  Mr. Forrester died in 1969.
"Mum was always devoted to her family in every aspect," Mrs. Forrester's daughter, Mavis
Collie said in Dunedin on Monday.
In her spare time Mrs. Forrester enjoyed pottering about the garden and doing some
seamstress work.
On her 100th birthday she gave some advice to the young people of today.
"Pay attention to your mother and father," Mrs. Forrester told the 'Otago Daily Times'.
She is survived by her three children and 15 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Otago Daily Times 18 7 89 //(article appeared with 1 photo) 'Humour not diminished after 100 years' By Nigel Benson A good spirit and a keen sense of humour are the keys to longevity, according to Mrs. Leah Forrester, who celebrates her 100th birthday today. Her sense of humour was in evidence yesterday when despite the Daily Times photographer's attempts to goad her into a smile, she steadfastly remained straightfaced before erupting into pales of laughter. Born in Invercargill in 1889, Mrs. Forrester lived in Waianiwa many years before moving to Dunedin with her husband Robert, in 1939. She has vivid memories of Invercargill and recalled yesterday, playing on the tramways in her youth, and working at the Invercargill Post Office where her duties included typing out bereavement notices to send to the families of New Zealanders killed during the great war. Despite a partial loss of hearing in recent years, Mrs. Forrester remains lively and alert and says she feels "quite good and happy" about being 100. "A little more good health would be nice", "apart from I've got everything I need and want". Mrs. Forrester's two sons are travelling down from Auckland today to help mark the occasion. According to her daughter, Mrs. Mavis Collie. While at the Belhaven Resthome where Mrs. Forrester is a resident, staff will be throwing a "great big party" for their latest centenarian, the owner of the home, Mrs. Mary Grant, said. And as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Mrs. Forrester has 100 years of advice for the young people of today. "Pay attention to your mother, and father", she said sternly, but with a twinkle in her eye.
RECIPIENT OF MILITARY MEDAL DIES AT 66 ODT 21 10 88 Mr. Robert (Pinky) Maitland, who recieved a medal for bravery in World War II, has died in Dunedin. He was 66. Born in Dunedin, Mr. Maitland was educated at George Street Normal School and King Edward Technical College. He left school at the age of 14 and began a plumbing apprenticeship, which was interrupted by World War II. In 1940, aged 18, Mr. Maitland joined the 2nd Scottish Regiment at Forbury Park in Dunedin, and was sent overseas in June, 1943. Mr. Maitland was posted to the 23rd Battallion, the South Island Regiment, in Italy. Wounded in November, 1943, he carried the bullet in his lower back for the rest of his life. On April 20, 1945, while advancing on the enemy near the Idice River in Italy, Seargeant Maitland dashed forward to challenge a group of Germans, firing his tommy gun. When the Germans took refuge in a dugout, he fired into it and forced the occupants to surrender. The New Zealanders rounded up 18 prisoners, including two officers, and seargeant Maitland was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. On his return from the war, Mr. Maitland completed his plumbing apprenticeship and went into business for himself. In 1952, he married Miss May Anglem, of Dunedin. They had nine children. Mr. Maitland continued with his plumbing business for a number of years, but spent the last six years until his retirement as a maintenance plumber at the Roslyn Woolen Mill. Mr. Maitland played for the Alhambra Rugby Football Club before the war, and was a member of the senior side years after the war. He was a member of the Dunedin RSA Bowling Club for 26 years and he played indoor bowls for the Mornington Bowling Club. Mr. Maitland is survived by his wife May and children Vicky, Peter, Bill, Wendy, Roy, Noelle, Tony, Gavin and Dale.

FORRESTERS IN SPACE. Some years ago, an American astronaut PATRICK G. FORRESTER, (COLONEL, USA) visited the NASA space station. STS-105 Discovery (Aug 10-22, 2001) was the 11th mission to the International Space Station. While at the orbital outpost, the STS-105 crew delivered the Expedition-3 crew, attached the Leonardo Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM), and transferred over 2.7 metric tons of supplies and equipment to the station. During the mission, Pat Forrester and Dan Barry performed two spacewalks totaling 11 hours and 45 minutes of EVA time. Forrester served as the prime robotics operator to install the MPLM. STS-105 also brought home the Expedition-2 crew. The STS-105 mission was accomplished in 186 orbits of the Earth, traveling over 4.9 million miles in 285 hours and 13 minutes.
Click on 'Alexander Turnbull Library' link to access a photo of the Clipper, "Wellington". This ship was built in 1874 by Robert Duncan, in the Port Glasgow, expressly for the emigration trade to NZ. Captain Cowan commanded the vessel for most of the trips, mainly to Otago, for the Albion Co. It was later incorporated into the Shaw Saville Line. Several other vessels of similar design and tonnage were built, and had names such as Invercargill, Canterbury, Nelson, Dunedin, Timaru and Oamaru.

Another picture, at the same site, is of the Wellington's damage to her prow, after having hit an iceberg.

Unfortunatley it has not been digitised yet, but a brief description of its contents can be found there. Diary + Ships Log
