"Could you tell us what inspired Mucky Video?"
"Not really; whatever though. I think Matthew James' music was itself the inspiration of the theme explored by the lyrics. The lyrics to Mucky Video are completely descriptive. It's a description of a disaffected man who finds the world, its news and all of its affairs mind-numbingly boring and the only thing in his life that really excites him is dirty videos and internet smut."
"Is the song written from his point of view?"
"No, actually it's written from the smut's point of view. I suppose that's quite unconventional."
"Is there a message to the song?"
"Of course - the point is to highlight flaws in the modern world. It's meant to be exciting and great to be alive in this day and age with all of our education, technology, travelling possibilities and long life expectancies, but the cold fact is that many of us are bored and nearly all of us concern ourselves too much with trivialities."
"And how about the vocal style? That's quite unconventional too."
"Well no, not really. It's just a bit different to what I usually do with The Bears. The sound on Mucky Video is just me trying to sound like David Bowie!" [laughs]
"Do you think it points to a new direxion for The Bears?"
"Not really; it's the same direxion with which we finished It's Sombre Here, but obviously we're a lot better now. I think The History of Purity will be more of the same really, but hopefully more impressive to listen to."
