Song information:
"Up High / The Bears"
From an interview:
"The first thing about it is that its intended to come across not as a 'song', but a piece of noise. We first started playing it during our charity tour; it served the purpose of a setlist interlude. But other than that the sounds in Up High are invoking I think. Fans have come up to me recently and started asking, 'Why do you not play Up High anymore?', but in my opinion, you can't always please everybody, sometimes its good to work backwards - at least its a movement. If you feed a man his favourite meal everyday, he'll be sick of it soon enough."
"When Up High was written, it wasn't a case of, "Let's write another song", it was born from experimentation in trying to use sounds as a means of illustration. Rather than reading a book or listening to someone talk, and then getting images in your head from their description, Up High was an attempt to replace traditional means of expression with spontaneously structured noise. We swapped tongues for strings and replication for continuity. That doesn't matter though, its the fact that when people come to see The Bears, they enter a contract with us. They observe whilst we express. This is why Up High is so important, not as a good or bad piece of music, but as an entity in itself. Chrys sometimes like to improvise vocally when its played live because it doesn't matter what words come out, it's more important that there are words coming out."
In three words? No, the thing is by doing that I'd be contradicting the nature of the song. Up High is about being free from the confines of structure. It would be meaningless to define a piece of noise in three words as noise is subjective to individual audial taste. Up High is a fan song. It seems only those individuals that have developed the palate for the underlying nature of The Bears sounds cheer for this song. That's good though. That's what we want. We want some people to like it, and some people to hate it. The fewer people that like it - the better. It's more to do with reaching a plateau of an aquired taste than making a basic judgement."
"Up High is musically concordant with its creators - arousing, intriguing, and genius. The Bears have done it again." - [09.08.94]
