Terry Pratchett's
Discworld
Discworld -
The Disc is the planet that the series is set on. Now the
interesting thing about this Disc is that it isn't a planet as we
know it. No, in fact the Disc does not have the normal planetary
shape, it is shaped like a DISC!
Well other than that small difference to the norm Discworld is
situated on top of the backs of four huge elephants which
unsurprisingly are standing on top of the back of an enormous
turtle. The great A'tuin the World turtle. The one real thing
that has been puzzling the Discworldian wise people of the unseen
university is "What sex is A'tuin?".
Well isn't that interesting, a "Disc" World speeding
through space at, well at a speed. Although that is not 100% sure,
especially the way Mr Pratchett writes. It speeds to, to,
something. OK, I am rambling, I'll shut up now. Discworld is a
world of wizardry, a world of weirdness and a world of wonder.
Rincewind the Wizzard -
Rincewind apart from having a somewhat
strange name, Rincewind happens to be probably the most important
character in the Discworld. Rincewind isn't exactly what you
would call a successful wizard, actually he has passed any of his
exams. It has been said that the occult power of a frog exceeds
that of Rincewind. Are he does though have a pointy hat, yes it
has stars and sequins and lots of glittery stuff on in it. It
even has Wizzard stitched lovingly if unprofessionally on it. So
how did Rincewind become a Wizard? Well that is a long story, and
no I am not going to tell it. Anyway Rincewind is the assistant
librarian at the Unseen University. Although you might think that
this could be a boring job but no. Rincewind has been cursed to
live in interesting times. Rincewind and his trusty companion the
Luggage are one of most well travelled and most frequently
written characters in the Discworld series.
Twoflower -
A four eyed ontrapinour from the Counterweight
continent. At first exception you might be let off for thinking
that Twoflower looks a little strange, but really once you've
seen past the four eyes, the rich appearance and the luggage
following hot on his heels he really is quite a cool guy.
Actually he is not unlike yourself, OK he is unbelievable rich
and hasn't a clue but he enjoys a good time and loves to travel.
Yes Twoflower is the very first tourist to ever come to
AnkMorpork and people are a little queryous. Twoflower is an
average person at his home country but at AnkMorpork Twoflower is
rich beyond imagination. One gold piece in the counterweight
continent is worth about a packet of chips, in AnkMorpork it'll
buy the local pub! And Twoflower has bags of it! As you can
imagine Twoflower has a few problems when he reaches AnkMorpork
the burglar/mugger/murderer capital of the Disc. Rincewind is
lucky enough to be his guide though all the perils that Discworld
can throw at it.
Luggage -
Just your typical luggage, a rectangular
box about so long, so wide. It carries all those niggling things
that just won't fit in your pocket. Stuff like pens, pencils,
cups of custard, ladders and any muggers that thought that one
wizard and a walking luggage look easy picking. Although
homicidal and not something you really want to pat, the luggage
resonates a kind of, well cuteness. Don't ask. The luggage is
made from Sapient Pear wood which is extremely rare and priceless.
Sapient Pear wood is itself produced by the powers of the
Sorcerers during the mage wars. What also makes the wood special
is that when it is fashioned in to a chest it has a habit of
never leaving its master. This particular Luggage has fallen into
the possession of Rincewind the wizzard, how it did I will leave
a secret. It is now Rincewinds faithful companion through thick
and thin, through life and death, through any dimension and it's
not about to go away.
Guards -
A group of mostly people who in a way
protect the city of AnkMorpork during the night. These guys
consist of 4 characters, Captain Vimes, Corporal Nobby, and
Corporal Carrot. These guys are my favourite characters in the
Discworld series.
Now as you can imagine protecting a city such as AnkMorpock is a
daunting task and policing its night life is like asking Sadam
Huisan to say sorry! But with a dedicated captain such as Captain
Vimes, well look out. In the past the city nightwatch was a
honourable and noteworthy occupation, those times are now in the
past. With the Patrician having legalising assignation and
thievery there are just a few rules that must changed. Never
break up a fight especially a bar fight, never arrest a thief or
assassin unless they don't have a permit, and never ever go in to
the Shades! So apart from these few things the nightwatch is a
interesting job, they, they do, um, well they look around bar
fights and arrest those that are still unconscious. Nobbys
speciality is going through the pocks of those that don't look
like they are going to wake up in a hurry and take any suspicious
material like bronze and silver pieces etc.
Death -
A man, that although being slightly under
weight is really quite a great person. He has been greatly
misunderstood, it is thought that he is a horrible man that goes
around killing people with a sythe. Now he does have a
sharp sythe, infact is has been honed to perfection first on a
stone, then silk, and then to finish it off on air. So yes,
is is death and he does go around killing people, kind of, really
he is just a pathway to the next world (probebly on the back of a
dog). If death wasn't there to help people, and every other
thing, to the "other side" they there spirits would
just hang around.
He does infact have a life of himself, he has a house, a daughter
Yassabelle and a Horse Binky. Yassabelle of cause isn't
Deaths real daughter, she is infact adopted.
