Pollyanna:
Title character in a 1913 novel by Eleanor H.Porter. An 11-year old girl who comes to live with a rather dour maiden aunt in Vermont after her father dies, she evinces a totally sunny disposition in the face of every negative circumstance. She makes a game, infact, of finding "something to be glad about". A Pollyanna is generally a derogatory name for one who sees good in everything, who is excessively and saccharinely optimistic. "Don't be such a Pollyanna!" is a putdown for one who constantly looks at the bright side of things.
