Kerr Smith was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 9, 1972. He grew up in the small suburb of Exton, PA. He has a younger sister named Allison. His name, Kerr, is his grandmother's maiden name. While he was in high school, he was involved in politics and held the class office of President, played many types of sports, ranging from lacrosse to soccer, and he was also involved with the academic team (which he held the presidency of). After graduating high school in 1990, he entered the University of Vermont where he majored in finance and accounting. He graduated there in 1994, with a B.A. in Finance and Accounting. From there he returned to Exton, and opened a marketing firm with his father.

He quickly learned it wasn't what he wanted out of life. He soon began acting. In high school he signed up for an acting class his sophomore year and found that he enjoyed it very much. A year later he played Sir Edward Ramsey in The King and I. This began his career in acting.

He moved to New York City and landed a role as an extra in the movie Twelve Monkeys. After nine months from this extra role, he was able to nab his first breakthrough part, playing Ryder Hughes on the CBS Daytime drama, As The World Turns, in 1996.

This earned him his first award for Best New Actor from Soap Opera Magazine that same year. A year later in May of 1997, he lost his job there. He also had a reading for Fox's drama, Party of Five, but either blew it or they didn't like him.

Almost directly after his short time on As the World Turns, he got the role on Dawson's Creek, playing Jack McPhee. Kerr's girlfriend, Ali, lives in Los Angeles. He also has a dog, Maxine. When he's not on the set of Dawson's Creek, Kerr is also a self taught pianist, he loves to cook, he is a writer (of both music and prose), and is currently working on a screen play about a college incident, but however the subject won't be revealed until it is completed.
