THE HISTORY OF THE UFC

The UFC, believe it or not, started as something to show the the world the efficiency of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. The event being the brainchild of Rorion Gracie who helped to put the event together with SEG sports entertainment group. The idea of the octagon is the idea of filmmaker John Milius (Conan: The Barbarian) who came in and mentioned it to Rorion.

Rorion thought about it and decided to use his little brother Royce, to show the dominance of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. Gracie entered against 7 other fighters from across the world: Art Jimmerson, a boxer that was so unprepared for this that he came in with one boxing glove on. Teila Tuli a sumo wrestler and the UFC'S first lesson in bigger ain't better. Pat Smith, a loud mouthed kickboxer and the UFC'S first bad-boy. Zane Fraizer and Kevin Rosier, two kickboxers who have the ability to brawl, an experienced no holds barred fighter who would fight in a tournament with Royces old brother, Rickson later on down the road. and a young fighter named Ken Shamrock who scored the first submission lock in the history of the UFC.

The first one was nasty. It set the tone for the first half of the UFC'S life. As the center of nasty, bloody, and brutal combat. It's kinda funny when you consider that of the seven televised fights in the ufc 2 of them had blood involved. I guess that's all it takes....

Amoung the non-fight events Football great Jim Brown was one of the original commentators and Helio Gracie got a special award. This is the last time that any kind of award would be given to anyone not fighting in the UFC. As for Jim Brown, he'll be back in 3 months for UFC 2.

Let's examine UFC 2

After the success of UFC 2 the ball just kept rolling along. The UFC had ditched the dumbass ref from number 1 and had a new ref named John Mcarthey. Despite UFC being very entertaining it upped the amount of blood and pushed the UFC further underground.

The UFC decided to become braver and headed out of Denver to North Carolina for UFC 3 -- The American Dream.

UFC 3 -- The American Dream

Kinda sums it up...the American dream. Making a lot of money and not really doing anything. Do I not approve of Jennum winning without fighting more than once? Yep.

Everything moves to Tulsa Oklahoma for UFC 4. The last UFC tournament to feature Royce Gracie. He's back to bounce back after his loss in last tournament. He didn't really lose as much as he didn't win. You know? Also, we get a chance to really see how good Steve Jennum is...

UFC 4 -- Revenge Of The Warriors

The answer is not in there. Jennum won but could not continue. Severn surprised everyone by taking out his first two opponents but lost to the mighty Royce Gracie in the finals. UFC decides to add in a bonus feature into UFC 5 we witness the birth of THE SUPERFIGHT.

UFC 5 -- Return Of The Beast

Shamrock and Gracie headline the superfight and work to a draw. Severn easily takes the tournament and is ready to take Shamrock in the second ever superfight. We also get introduced to one of the more colorful characters the octagon has yet to provide. He's so interesting WCW picked him up and turned him into a professional wrestler for this.
