10th Station: Hakone

History

Hakone is the most dangerous part of the Tokaido highway. There are many high mountains and travelers had to cross the hakone pass to get to Kyoto. Although it is still hard to cross the pass on foot, the route is well preserved.

In Hakone, there were 6 honjin, officially appointed inns, but hakone shuku (inn district) was not so big. Nowadays, Hakone became a popular tourist spot and there are many shops and inns on Tokaido highway.

On top of the pass, there was Hakone-no-sekisho or Hakone barrier which was well known as most hard barrier to pass through, especially for women (Breaking through a barrier was felony). The sekisho was restored at that spot and there is a sekisho museum where you can learn about sekisho (barrier).
