44th Station: Ishiyakushi

History

Ishinakushi station was established in 1616 between Yokkaichi station and Kameyama station due to the long distane of the two stations. People did not use inns as places to stay in this district that much-- Daimyo processions used them just to take a rest, and people who visited Ise shrine took the other road. Thus, this district had a serious financial problem in the Edo period.

Ishiyakushi temple built in the early Edo period, as shown in the Hiroshige's ukiyoe, still exists. The original one, which was built in the Nara period (710-794), was destroyed during the Japanese civil war period. It is said that the original one was really huge.
