30th Station: Maisaka

History

There is a big lake called "Hamana-ko (ko means lake)", and the lake used to be a fresh water lake in very old days. However, a very big earthquake occured around 1500, and it resulted in a big break between the ocean and the Hamana-ko and the lake became a waltwater lake. Because of the break, people were not able to go to the next station, Arai without a boat, and it is said that people enjoyed chatting with other passengers on the boat as you can guess from Santo Kyoden's "Tokaidochu Hizakurige".

Maisaka is famous for its fishing industry. People in Maisaka started raising eels in the Maiji era (1868-1912) and the industry grew rapidly.
