Hi John, I had a long telephone conversation this afternoon with my son-in-law's father in North Carolina, Howard Gerald Manning, Sr., b. 24 May 1923 at Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, VT, who tells me that many of the people I am finding in your Manning genealogy are his line. He is the grandson of Martin H. Manning and the son of Gerald Vaness Manning, born in Hyde Park, VT and Elizabeth Ann Davis born in Charlotte, VT. As I get more information from him and his cousin Wesley Manning, I may have some more photos and information to add to your Manning page.

Howard Manning Sr. told me to get in touch with his cousin, Wesley Manning, son of "Uncle Harley Manning" who died of leukemia. Wesley has apparently been doing a good deal of genealogical research and I may come across him in your information. I'm in such a state of Manning Overload at the moment that I'm heading for bed (I can stay up all night on this stuff!).

I have been downloading many of the Manning photos and will mail pertinent ones to Howard Sr.. He told me that a woman he knew as a child as "Grandma Griswold" had a large, what he thought must have been a goiter, on the right side of her neck and that he thought she died relatively young. He also said that he was pretty sure Mary Cleary was actually Mary Leary, as that was the name he knew in his family. I haven't had time, yet, to get this all together but will give you what I can when I get it.

As I was going around your Manning site here are a few questions I have:

1.) Martin Henry Manning's photo doesn't load - takes you to Yahoo with a "sorry the page you requested was not found" at: http://www.geocities.com/manning_genealogy/photos/manningmartinralphralphjrandson.jpg

2.) Music doesn't load on Griswold Genealogy Vermont page - but it just may be my computer

3.) Why does clicking on Ella M. Griswold on: http://www.geocities.com/manning_genealogy/williammanningdescendants.html bring up a photo of Evelyn Manning Hawley with children Mildred and Margaret and her mother Ella Griswold Manning? Who's who, here? Is Ella M. Griswold somehow Ella Griswold Manning?

Thanks so much for this excellent site. It is absolutely marvelous. I've got to get one of my own going someday. Time is the big problem!

Dear Ann, thank you for your informative e-mail and interest in our Manning Genealogy web site. It is gratifying to know that kin are copying photos and information from it for future generations to know and enjoy.

There were two Griswold women that married into the Manning family. One was my great grandmother "Ella Griswold Manning" and I don't believe she had a goiter on her neck, at least I could not find one from the photos I have. Perhaps it was Rhoda Griswold who was married to Charles Manning?

I could not find the photo of "Martin Henry Manning." I don't know why it dropped off our Manning web site. Since I could not locate it, I replaced it with a photo of Martin along with the Ralph Manning Sr and Jr photo. It's the best I can do for now.

I removed all the music from our web page. It was taking up to much web space which I needed for all the photos I received from numerous Manning decendants throughout the country.

Yes, Ella Griswold is "Ella Griswold Manning." Ella married my great grandfather William Manning who was a twin brother of Willard Manning. Of course Ella is the oldest in the picture and she is holding Mildred Hawley who just passed away this past October 2004 (Parkinson's disease) and old age. Along side Ella is Evelyn Manning Hawley (my grand mother) who is holding Margaret Hawley (my mother).

I welcome your comments and any additions that you might think would be appropriate for this site.

Again, thank you for your interest and best regards from San Antonio, TX

John Hawley
