Manning Tid Bits

We are soliciting your help in obtaining information/stories (family lore) about this Manning Family and their descendants. We recognize that stories have a way of being changed over the years; nevertheless, it is better to have some family history stories than none at all. Story conributions will be your way of preserving your family history and providing other family members the opportunity to know and enjoy the story also. Stories should be submitted to John Hawley, the webmaster for this site. Thank you.

John, I'm not sure if I mentioned this to you before. When I received Mary Cleary's death cert. it listed her parents as James and Mary Cleary. I know that you wouldn't put that on the website, but she is your gggreat grandmother and I thought you might like the info. Also, on Sarah Jane Maxfield's death cert. it list her parents as George Maxfield born in Scotland and Sarah Jane Jones born in Hyde Park. The real reason I'm writing is because I was on the Ireland Genweb website and found a listing for James Cleary in Cork Ireland because he owned land in 1870. Not sure if this is the same James as Mary's father, but you never know. The address is: www.rootsweb.com/~irlcor/Landowner4.html check it out.

John, Michael's cemetery records say everything that you already have on the website and it also states there that he was born in Cork, Ireland. he and Mary are buried on lot # 114. Mary Larose and Willard are also buried at Village Cemetery in lot #129. The Martin Manning is also on Lot #114 with Michael and Mary. She also found 2 other Manning's whose parents were Michael and Mary
1)Lucy Manning died 7/19/1867 at 5 years of age of dropsy on the brain(don't know what that is ?)
2)Julia Manning died 4/2/1858 at 5 months old of indigestion, she was born in Hyde Park
Even though these two girl's parents are Michael and Mary, they are not buried with them and we don't know where they are buried. (Contribution by Erin Gagnon)

Jill (Manning) Congdon, daughter of Charlene Manning, is a SSgt in the US Marines. Jill currently is one of the Chief Mechanics on the President's helicopter. The next time you see the President's helicopter on TV think of Jill. Jill and her husband Joshua Congdon live in Virginia.

Are you a NASCAR aficionado? If so, you may be surprised to know that one of our relatives works on the NASCAR circuit. David B. Rogers, son of Anne (Manning) and David C. Rogers of Marshfield, VT works for the Joe Gibbs racing team. Dave graduated from Clarkson University and then obtained his Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the General Motors Institute. After graduation he traveled to North Carolina where he got his current job. During the week Dave is an engineer for Joe Gibbs' drivers (Bobby Labonte and Tony Stewart), and on race days he is on Tony Stewart's pit box with his computer. Look for the "Home Depot" crew.

An article about Dave Rogers and others on the Job Gibbs Racing Team.

MILITARY INFORMATION PERTAINING TO MICHAEL MANNING JR.:
Enlisted 12 Aug 1861 in Hyde Park, mustered in 16 Sept 1861 with Company D, 5th Infantry, transfered to Veterans Reserve Corps 30 Sept 1863; discharged 15 Sept 1864. (contribution by Erin Gagnon).

MILITARY INFORMATION PERTAINING TO JOHN MANNING:
Enlisted 12 Aug 1861 in Hyde Park, mustered in 16 Sept 1861 with Company D, 5th Infantry, wounded and taken prisoner 29 June 1862 (Battle of Savage Station), and paroled 3 Aug 1862; discharged 14 Oct 1862 for wounds. (Contribution by Erin Gagnon).

John Manning was wounded in the Civil War. His lower jaw shot off. He was placed in an army hospital at Savage Station in VA. The entire hospital was invaded by the confederate army and all were taken as POW's. John was paroled 3-6 months later and returned to Hyde Park to Sarah and their first child. He lived there with his family and had 6 more children. Meanwhile, he got a hired girl pregnant. After all that he killed himself by hanging himself in the barn. This is where it gets interesting. Apparently, someone saw a shadow of someone walking out of the barn at the time that John was supposed to be hanging himself. Or that's how the rumor goes I hear. Don't know if there's any truth behind it, but it certainly adds to the drama. (contributed by Erin Gagnon)

The following story was told by Harry Manning (deceased) to his son Larry: Just prior to John Manning's death someone shot his cow, then burned his hay. They believed it was a neighbor that was having a feud with John. Additionally, about the same time one of his sons was charged with cutting the "drive belt" at the saw mill. In despair, John Manning told his wife that he was going to hang himself. Evidently, she did not take him seriously until they found him the next day. This story is being conveyed to show you John Manning's state of mind prior to his suicide. Also, after John's death they found the man that cut the drive belt thereby exonerating John's son.

Michael Manning was on the 1850 Johnson, Lamoille County, VT census

The following information was extracted from the booklet "Shire Town of Lamoille County" - A Historical Story of Hyde Park, VT

St. Teresa's Roman Catholic Church. ...."The stained glass windows in the Church (St. Teresa) were gifts in memory of Dr. Hugh H. Tyndall, Mrs. Hugh Tyndall, Mr. Gavin Tyndall, Bernard and Anna Rooney, Mr. Frank Stewart, Mr. Michael and Ellen Manning, Catherine Miner, and Bernard P. Finnegan."

Added information -- I received the following information from Bradley Allen of Wolcott, VT.
.....Years ago when we were looking for Shirley's family we saw the record of the marriage of Michael and Ellen and was surprised Ellen's father was Rev James Dougherty, the Congregational minister from Johnson,in those days the mixed marriage (Protestant/Catholic) was not common ,I haven't checked the church records to see if it was. {end}. COMMENTS FROM JOHN HAWLEY: The only reason I placed Bradley's comments here was due to the uniqueness of the situation. It is not uncommon to see a son change from the religion of his family to that of his wife, however, it is rare when a daughter changes from the family religion especially when her father is a Minister.

...."At the turn of the century Will Manning operated the first steam mill in the village. (N. Hyde Park). It was located on the left side of Ferry Street before the bridge over Thompson Brook. Remains are still visable." The 1900 Hyde Park Census indicated that William was in that profession.

W.D. Manning served as a Selectman of Hyde Park sometime between the years of 1890 and 1910.

The following Manning gravesites were located in St Teresa's Cemterey in Hyde Park

Michael Manning, (b. 1844, d. 1919)
Ellen Manning (wife)(b. 1844, d. 1929)
Albert Manning (son) (b. 1872, d. 1896)
Frank Manning (son) (b. 1881, d. 1966) Note from John Hawley: According to the SSDI Frank died in LaCrosse, LaCrosse County, WI. He was very old so he must have been living with some relatives who were considerate enough to have his body shipped back to Lamoille County for burial in St Theresa's Cemetery with his family.
George Manning (son) (b. 1868, d. 1887)
Mary Manning (dau) (b. 1886, d. 1906)
(contributed by Bren Manning)

In the Catholic cemetery, Hyde Park, VT, are 7 stones, for Michael Manning (1841-1919), his wife Ellen (1844-1929), and their 6 children, Henry, George, Albert, Edward, Frank, and Mary.

I think Michael may be the younger brother of my search subject, Bridget Ellen Manning (born in Ireland 1 January 1838) who came to Hyde Park, VT as an infant, married Joseph Boyce, and died in 1918.

John, I found out some interesting information on Sarah Maxfields side from the 1850 Census: Hyde Park, VT

George W. Maxfield, 43, M, farmer, b. NH
Sarah Maxfield, 44, F, VT
Sarah L or J Maxfield (our Sarah Jane), 6, F, VT, in school
William Maxfield, 4, M, VT, school
Mary L Maxfield, 10/12, F, VT
Joseph F. Tuttle, 16, M, VT, Idiot

This is definately our line because Sarah Jane's mother was first married to ???Tuttle and secondly to George Maxfield. Also, there is some information on Mary L Maxfield from the Vermont Vital Records Index: was born in Hyde Park and at age 18 she married John Britton on Jan 1 1868. I received this information from Chuck Maxfield from GenForum. I know that this doesn't follow the Manning line directly, but rather your Maxfield line. This is just fyi.
