Kamieniec Ząbkowicki

The Kamieniec castle belongs to a group of the most ostentatious romantic residences in Europe. It was raised from the funds provided by Duchess Marianna of the Netherlands, the wife of Duke Fryderyk Henryk Albrecht of Prussia. The castle is the last work designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The building was started in 1839 and completed under the guidance of Ferdynand Martius in 1872. Sited on a hill, the castle received neo-Gothic appearance of very unusual, individual character: the main hall, for example, imitated the Great Refectory of the Malbork castle. Original idea, new architectural design and technology as well as lavish finishing made it one of the most magnificent residences of that time in Europe. A scenic park was established around the castle according to a design by Peter Joseph Lenne, architect of the royal gardens. Devastated and ruined by the Red Army after 1945, the castle fell into a decline. It is under reconstruction now to become a hotel.
