Stereo photography is early as the camera itself with a peak at 1890-1920. in the 1950's stereo photography revived and stereo home photography was popular. The stereo effect is created by taking two pictures at once from a stereo camera with 2 lenses or the early method of taking 2 pic. form the same camera which is moved (that method was not very effective for taking pic. of moving objects like animals etc).
Looking closely at both pictures the human eye (and the brain) creates a third pic. which is 3-D
