Wiltshire spider distribution maps
Enoplognatha ovata Female Enoplognatha ovata with cocoon. Click for larger image.
Nationally: Widespread and very common.

First Wiltshire report; O Pickard-Cambridge, 1912 (as Phyllonethus lineata. This was before the very similar E. latimana was recorded in the UK).

Very common throughout Wiltshire, Enoplognatha ovata is probably to be found on every bramble bush in the county, at the right time of the year. Besides bramble the spider uses a range of low vegetation and shrubs to build its webs. The female curls a leaf around a silk cell to protect its cocoon.
