G'day

The first animation below is of Central Australia, (via Mildura-Adelaide-Alice Springs-Townsville-Cairns). It compiles some images of a car journey via Alice Springs and Uluru, N Queensland and back south to Victoria (home).

These pictures below illustrate tall forms of some Australian Terrestrial Orchids. Dipodium punctuatum (Hyacinth Orchid) is displayed here in several of it's stages of growth. These orchids typically grow to waist height, in good positions. Most Australian tererestrial orchids are smaller than these examples.

Following the Hyacinth Orchid, there is the blue Sun Orchid (Thelymitra major). The flowers will close up without direct sunlight. They typically flower in Summer in warm sunny weather. There are other similar species in this genus. May be found in dry forrests and clay soils, with Messmate (Eucalyptus obliqa), Grass Trees (Xanthoreceae australis),
Finally is a brief glimpse of the Potato Orchid, . It likes cool, moist forrests and sheltered sites. It is known to produce tubers that might be a traditional food source. I have found these in association with Mountain Ash (Eucalyptus regnans), Common Bird Orchids, (Chiloglottis gunnii) in SE Victoria.
