Chapter 1
Turn The Heat On
Yusuke
reaches into the mailbox and pulls out a stack of letters, leaflets and discount
coupons. Sorting through his mail, Yusuke’s eyes fell onto a blue enveloped
that didn’t have a stamp or anything written on it. Twirling it around, he
peered at it cautiously before tearing the seal apart.
“What’s
this?” A voice from behind him asked. Yusuke let out a big yelp, before
turning around in mid-air to face a blue haired bishoujo.

“Botan!
You scared me half to death!” Yusuke panted, rubbing at his chest to calm
himself down, “You have the same habit as Koenma, appearing out of nowhere and
scaring everyone to death!” Dressed in a t-shirt, vest and jeans, Botan just
grinned cheekily, then turned her attention back to Yusuke’s mail.
Yusuke
pulled out a card which had sparkling, silver words written across it. It read
“Welcome To Reikai’s Dance Mania!” Yusuke simply raised an eyebrow,
whereas Botan gasped.
“Reikai’s
Dance Mania! You guys are invited too! In fact, everyone related to the Reikai
are invited! Open it and see what it says!” Botan exclaimed, leaning in to see
better. Yusuke opened the card, and in it, was a formal invitation for the grand
opening ball of the mania next week.
“Wow!
The dance party! Many people are invited! This year even certain people from
Makai are invited!” Botan squeals, glad that she will have many friends
joining her in this festive.
“But
why wasn’t I invited before?” Yusuke asked, scratching his head in
confusion.
“Erm…heehee…you
were fighting away in the Black Martial Arts tournament, then you were in Makai…so…”
Botan answered awkwardly. Yusuke simply gave the matter a shrug before waving
goodbye to Botan and going back into the house.
Meanwhile,
Botan flips out her oar and starts gliding through the air. She gives a small
sigh as she pondered through her dilemma. She was also invited to the party, but
however, she didn’t seemed to be able to find herself a date.
Yusuke
was, of course, taking Keiko. Kuwabara will probably be lucky enough to date
Yukina (not that Botan wanted him as a date). Kurama has rows of girls lining up
for him and Mukuro will be with Hiei. Botan suddenly realizes how very paired up
everyone is. Everyone but her. Perhaps it was because of her job. As a ferry
girl, other than dead bishounens, she doesn’t get to see other beautiful men.
Focusing
back on her considerations, Botan suddenly realizes the only choice that she has
left--- Koenma. Botan’s face flushed in a bright pink and she tries hard to
erase that thought from her mind. However, some desire still sinks into her mind
and she starts to have a fight with her inner voice and she didn’t look where
she was going, until…
“Botan!”
A voice boomed, followed by a continuous crashing sound. Botan finds herself
sprawling across the marble tiles of the Reikai palace and she could feel
something soft under her legs. She turned her head with great effort just to see
Koenma(in teenage form) getting squashed under her and her oar across his face.
“Koenma-sama!”
Botan exclaimed, struggling to her feet and getting rid of the oar. Koenma
didn’t look too happy. His eyes were in silts and a huge cross was hanging on
his forehead. He rises to his feet and dusts his light brown turtleneck.
“Botan!
What were you doing? Not looking at where you are going! You better beware of me
taking points off your flying license!” Koenma threatened. Botan wasn’t
listening though, her mind tempting her to the little desire that led to such
situations. Koenma looked at his employee again, seeing that she looked as if
she was in a trance and her face was changing in all colours.
“Botan,
are you alright? Did you hit your head or something?” Koenma asked, brows
wrinkled in concern. Botan bolts up and starts giving an awkward laugh, acting
animatedly.
“Anyway,
since I met you, can you give me a ride to the Ningenkai? You are on vacation
today, right? I want to see Yusuke and the rest.” Koenma requested, ignoring
Botan’s strange actions. Botan agrees with a small nod, after which she flips
out her oar and Koenma gets on near the end of the oar.
Botan
kicks off from the ground and the two zoomed off through layers of clouds.
Suddenly, a bird flew in front of the oar and Botan steers the paddle
dangerously to the side of the bird. Koenma slips from his grip and reach out to
hold on to something. He hugs a particular soft object, which steadied him.
“Botan!
You…!” Koenma was about to scold Botan again when he realizes that he was
hugging Botan at her waist. Koenma quickly freed his arms from Botan, face
burning in embarrassment. He grips the oar instead, heart beating at a hundred
mile an hour. Botan stars into the sky, face red as a beetroot.
Both
were silent afterwards until Koenma points out Yusuke’s block of flat. They
landed smoothly on the ground and Koenma knocks on Yusuke’s door.
“Konichiiwa,
Yusuke.” Koenma greeted, as it was already 5pm in the afternoon.
“Yo!
Koenma! You came at the right time! Everyone’s here.” Yusuke said and showed
Koenma and Botan in. Kurama, Kuwabara, Yukina and Keiko were seated at the sofa,
drinks and tidbits piling on the tea table.
“Konichiiwa,
Koenma-san, Botan-san.” Yukina nodded politely at them. Keiko waved while
Kurama smiled at them. However, Kuwabara was too busy stuffing himself with
chips to reply.
“Well,
we were thinking of going to the disco later to warm up before the party. And
everyone needs to relax once in a while. Both of you coming?” Yusuke invited,
gesturing towards them.
“Sure!”
Botan replied, back in her cheery mode. However, the thought of her party
problem sort of dampens her spirit.

Koenma
kept his hands in his jeans’ pockets and stole a peek at Botan. He wondered if
she had a date to the party. Koenma finds himself stuck with a problem ever
since he received the invitation for the dance party.
After
staying in his office for almost five hundred years, Koenma realizes that he
didn’t have a girl he could take to the party. Or maybe yes. He could ask
Botan, but a certain kind of nervousness in him swallows up all the courage he
usually had in him.
As
they enter the disco, Koenma decides that perhaps he needed a lesson or two from
Kurama on dating. Koenma couldn’t really dance. It was no help at all by just
sitting in his office all day long, stamping and sorting documents.
The
rest of the gang were bopping away, moving to the dance floor and starting a
dance up. Botan was standing beside Koenma, her ponytail bopping up and down as
she starts a small dance. Koenma decides that he would just get a drink and
watch everyone dance when a hand grips his arm and pulls him towards the dance
floor.
“Koenma-sama!
You didn’t come here to just sit around and do nothing, right? You need to get
moving and start dancing!” Botan coaxed and starts dancing hypnotically to the
music. Boy was she beautiful! And those moves! Koenma was beginning to think
whether she learned disco dance somewhere.
Koenma
tries to imitate other people’s move, bopping with the music and slowly sinks
into the rhythmic music. Slowly his moves turned swift and skillful and he
starts wondering if he had a talent until he caught Botan’s eyes.
She
does a difficult twirl and she was challenging Koenma to the dance, grinning
widely at her dance partner. Koenma accepts her challenge and replies with a
flip, causing the people on the dance floor to turn their heads towards them.
The
contest begins and each tried to outdo the other with last-minute dance moves.
The dance floor cheered when a stance was successful. Till now, none of them
failed in their moves. Suddenly, Botan reaches a hand to
Koenma.
“Take
me.” She said. Koenma did what was told and held her hand while she did a
magnificent twirl in. She landed against Koenma’s chest and looked up at him.
Koenma
could feel his heart skipping beats and almost stopped. Wolf-whistles were heard
and Koenma blushes bright red. He quickly let go of Botan’s hand and ran into
the crowds that stood by the dance floor.
Reaching
a secure seat in a corner, Koenma pants and smoothens down his heartbeat from
all that dancing and that Botan’s nearness. There he was, dancing happily with
Botan until this certain thing, this thing that made him awkward around her and
made him run away. This thing called love.
Koenma
ran his hand through his shiny brown hair and sunk into the comfort of the
leather covered chair. So should he ask her to the party? He was cowering away
from the thought of not getting accepted. He didn’t know. He felt the urge to
get a drink and moved towards the bar.
Asking
for one of the strongest brew they have, however, halfway through the cup, he
was already feeling the dizziness in his head. Insisting on finishing the cup,
he gulped down the rest of the brew and feels sleepy and dizzy, the world
swirling in his head.
Just
then, Botan happens to spot him and he was already starting to cause trouble. He
was walking in waves and was pointing at some men, muttering something about
getting documents ready for him to stamp.
“Koenma-sama!”
Botan calls out as Koenma falls into her arms in a deep sleep. The rest of the
gang also moved to the duo and they agreed to call it a day.
Once
in an alley, Botan flips her oar out and pulls Koenma onto it. However, she
didn’t think Koenma would stay long on the oar in such a state. He needed a
support. Botan decides, finally, that she would just have to hold on to Koenma
in a bear hug with Koenma sitting in front and she reaches her hands in front to
grip the oar.
As
they zoomed through the dark blue sky, Botan could feel Koenma’s warmth from
his body. She tried to turn her head, but her face was right beside Koenma’s
and Botan couldn’t move.
“Koenma-sama…”
Botan whispered.
