Eddie Murphy returns to one of his few successful roles in this sequel to The Nutty Professor. He once again plays Professor Sherman Klump, and the whole Klump Family This time they are given a lot more screen time, though they add nothing to the plot and only try to provide comic relief.
Sherman finds that a couple of strands of his DNA are Buddy Love (his slim, self-confident alter-ego in the first film), which cause him to say inappropraite things. When he offends the girl he fancies, Denise (Janet Jackson) Sherman resolves to remove the offending Dioxyribo Nucleic Acid. However an accident causes Buddy to reconstitute with canine DNA. He sets himself up as a rival to sell Sherman's youth-restoring formula. However, the procedure that separated the two protoganists is causing Sherman to lose his vast intellect, and will eventually leave him a drooling vegetable. So it's a race against time to re-constitute them...
Admittedly I haven't seen the first movie, so I don't know how they compare, but after seeing this I'm in no great hurry to. Eddie Murphy is superb as Sherman Klump, making a really sympathetic character, and convincingly playing his kin too, but he's let down by a poor script. What genuinely amusing moments there are, are few and far between. Instead there is an over-reliance on gross-out humour, which is suprisingly hit-and-miss, considering
American Pie directors the Weitz Brothers contributed to the screenplay. Given the movie's title, you'd expect the Klumps to be central figures in the story-line, but are instead relegated to sub-plots (Papa Klump's impotency, Grandma Klump's nymphomania) and disappointing coimc interludes.
Another disappointing outing for Murphy, with humour too juvenile for adults, and a movie too boring for kids.
