Sixth Sense writer/director M. Night Shyamalam returns with his fourth movie, Unbreakable. Like it's supernatural predecessor this movie has a great twist at the end, which you should not let anyone even hint at to you. In fact, the least you know before setting foot in the cinema the better. Unbreakable defies any attempts to classify it by genre. It moves between different ones, and is so different from any other films in those genres that it's meaningless anyway. This makes for a much more exciting and satisfying viewing experience, as you really don't know what is going to happen next.
Bruce Willis plays David Dunn, a security guard who is contacted by Samuel L. Jackson'a Elijah Price when he is the sole survivor of a train crash.
Both actors are masters of holding the viewer's attention with their screen presence and charisma, and Shyamalan makes great use of this with scenes that go on for an unusual amount of time without cutting to different angles.
Shyamalan's directing seems more confident here, and what could have been a slow plot is very watchable as he lets things out very slowly, keeping you gripped right up to the end. He leaves you wanting more, which is surely the sign of a great story.
The downside is that repeat viewings will never have the same impact, and the lack of spectacle and set-pieces may even make it a lot duller the second time, but this is still a great movie.
