That old memory gets you sometimes. I just got out Sid The Rally Car's old number plates - DUP 304G - not DUP 436C must be getting mixed up with the numbers.

Comments:
Bought the first one, HPT 436C in 1974 or thereabouts and fell in love with it immediately. Since that day I've owned roughly 13 Imps although the last one was sold in the late '80s - it was a full 998 Rally Imp with a factory engine. I've yet to find an ther engine that gives the same heart-tugging scream and so smoothly, too. Thinking about the days we used to beat Lotus Twin-Cam engined Escorts on Road rallies and laugh at the others trying to get traction in the snow events.......I can remember doing the Allertonshire in '83 I think where we went up a hill in second and held the revs so long I got hit by the co-driver for going over 10.5K just before the rotor arm sheared. We managed to continue by using a rotor arm from a '71 Escort Mk1 that didn't really fit and so only ran above 3000rpm but it didn't really make a lot of d fference.... I remember shearing rear wishbones on a regular basis almost every Saturday night. I still have loads of parts and I'm sure I even have the official Rootes Workshop Manual in the loft.... Cars I've had? Can't remember all the registration numbers but HPT 436C was a 1965 Loch Blue Imp (my first) and took my wife Cath and I all over Britain. DUP 436C was a basic Super Imp that got converted into 'Sid the Rally Car' - my kids still remember him with nostalgia and they still talk about the wonderful trips we used to make up to the Isle of Luing to see the Mother-in-Law and the way my wife would cringe at the antics up the old (if you remember it the way it was) road to Arrochar before they made it straight and boring and took out all the yumps. I will never ever forget the kids, 2 and four precisely, shouting at the top of their voices, 'Make i go in the air AGAIN, Daddy'. Aah, happy days. OPT 559P was a 1976 Caledonian. The very first time I saw one was the week before my wedding in June 1976. I loved it. Had to have one. It wasn't until 1979 that I got my wish. I loved it but I rebuilt it twice. Damn those wheel arches and all the salt th y put on the roads in the North-East of England. XNL 392J - Hah! Bought as a gold coloured 1971 car from Cowgate Motor Company in 1976. Soon became a sort of colander with very airtex wheel arches. Took it down to Kent to the Father-In-Law's garage and rebuilt it in a week using all the latest in techno ogy - I remember spraying it eventually using a Burgess Electric Spraygun (which performed admirably well) and using Finnegan's Hammerite. It was, after that, the most robust paint finish I've ever had in all my time with cars. I can remember cars called Bert (1976) Alf (1984) Joe (my friend Andy Aird's fantastic 998 that would rev to such unbelievable limits).

Well the Stiletto is still being restored, so I got a deluxe which is dressed up as a sport, with deep dish pulleys, sport hd & cam, lightened flywheel, nikki twin choke carb, janspeed manifold & system & front rad. Or it did have until the engine seized ound one bent valve, & no piston on no.4....But luckily enough have sourced a engine & g/box from a Caledonian, have sport head away being ported,GE2 cam waiting & loking for DHLA inlet/exh manifold & 40 DHLA's

I think that my last attempt here got lost! Anyway, I write as a sub-editor on The Scots Magazine where we are currently (July 99) preparing an article on Imps. When young, my family owned two Imps, one of which was a Super seen in a showroom in Calland r. We then had a 2nd or 3rd hand Standard 9 and the fresh, sleek styling of the Imp was such a contrast. PYJ 587 took us all around Scotland from 1964-1972 and it was a real wrench to sell it. The garage remarked on its pristine condition and if only w had kept it! It was a lovely strong blue, not the pale turquoise which we didn't like. Then we bought TFG 548K which was a mustard Super, with a few more advanced features than before. Again, it was a good car but never, for me, had the character of PYJ 587. As my father says of his Imps: "They took me many a mile!" Indeed they did - and we also had a few of the irritations endured by all owners such as water pump troubles and cold starting. On one memorable occasion, we returned home to St Andrews and got Stuck near the West Port... Oh, the embarrassment! With more investment and refining, I'm sure that the Imp could have gone on to a 1990s-and-beyond format. But at least it is being kept alive and I hope non-specialist readers will enjoy my recollections. I'd love to hear if anyone has an original strong blue (not respray) 1964 Imp with a photo. I still think of that sad day in 1972 when we sold PYJ 587 with almost a tear in my eyes, especially when a new and careless owner smashed it up(but not himself) in the country near St Andrews. PYJ 587, you deserved better and I will never, to my dying d y, ever forget your style and the way I, as a schoolgirl, got to see so much of Scotland

Nice Page. I'd love to know what kind of strengthening work was carried out to chop the roof off. I have a Californian and a stiletto, both of the road and living in my parents garden in scotland, neither would take much to get them running but a fair bit to get them perfect. I just don't have the time and as i have been living in london for the pa t month i can't do much to them from here. Would love to beef them both up but never had the time, money or a place to store them. Maybe soon. Love to see other imps - they just look the biz. Cheers for now.

It's coming on nice, as yet I don't have a page. As for cars, I have a Stiletto 930cc by T.Hatcher gp4 arches, a Caledonian nearly restored to not original spec, green 930cc 28/36 spax allround etc. A hand built Rallye, reputedly the last shell to leave the factory in '77 built by an incredible engineering chap and finished to the highest standards reg'd in 1980. A standard Imp on the road '71. One other complete car awaiting restoration, and two other cars, mostly just shells now having been cannibalised. And lastly a Lotus Elan+2 still at the paint shop but gatting the resto treatment soon. We have my old Saab 900 and the wife's scabby old metro and the current family wagon is a Merc 190. see you at nat day maybe.

My Interest with Imps started back in 1988 when by chance I was lucky enough to purchase N.Z. most hitoric Imp, Known as the " Sidchrome Imp". Driven by Jim Richards one of N.Z.most successful drivers. During the not yet completed restoration I also purchased 2 other Imps of which also have historic importance. My main interest is racing Imps, and h ve spent alot of time Building race 875cc engines and converting 875cc to 998cc for race use. I own my own engineering toolroom and this gives me the equipment to Modify Standard, or manufacture special components. Would like to hear from any one with similar Imp interests.

RHD Imp spotted next to barn in Maine, USA, wihout too much rust. Trying to contact owner. Windscreen stickers indicate Columbia University (New York City) and some South African rally. Never seen another in the States.

Car Owned (If Imp Variant): 2 Hillman Imp, 1964, LHD
Comments:
Good to see so much of Imps on the web. My cars were sold in Sweden, hence the LHD. One is in orignal but unrestored condition - severe rust in floor and sills just in front of rear wheelarches. Body is completly stripped and hanging in ropes from the gar ge ceiling. The other one was tuned for circuit racing back in 1976. Two years later I crashed the car quite substantially. Bent both ends more than 4", so it didn't do anything but sharp left turns. The car has been stationery since, but I hope to run it again sometime. Historic Racing seem to grow more popular all the time. Most parts used were of Hartwell origin. I could keep writing for hours but have to stop now. Again I am glad to see so much about Imps presented in a very professional manner. Thank you. All the best from Lars Hagermark, soon publishing my own homepage.

Hello William Thanks for the e-mail. Enjoyed your home page! All the best with the IMP restorations. Both my sister and mother-in-law had IMPs in the late 60's /early 70's and had generally good motoring out of them.
