The term EDC is applied as a generic term to cover all
the display and open and closed-loop control tasks of
the engine management and diesel-injection management.
The basic functions of the injection control are the
adaptation of:
Injected fuel quantity, and
Start of injection
Initially, these functions were mechanically controlled.
With the advent of Electronic Diesel Control (EDC) it
became possible to implement innovative functions. These
permit the diesel-engined vehicle to conform with the
increasingly severe demands regarding comfort and
convenience, dynamic performance, fuel economy, and low
emissions. In addition, the ECU permits OBD and
communication with other ECUs in the vehicle.
The ECUs basic design and construction is the same for
both passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
Supplementary functions can be integrated either as
hardware or as software.
