The Man...The Music... The   Maddness...            The Murder...           The Mystery Remains...
Bottom Line: A nearly perfect film that will touch your heart.
An amazing film, that will touch your heart. It's that good. It's life changing, I swear! Told through the eyes of Antonio Salieri, who is now old and insane, he recalls a time when he was the most powerful composer in Europe. He was Court Composer to Emperor Joseph II, and it seemed everyone liked him. He liked himself. Until HE came. His name was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. A young child prodigy that Salieri had heard so much about. Eagerly, Antonio went to meet Mozart. That day changed his life. When Salieri saw how vulgar, obscene, and immature Mozart was he could not help but be thrown into a jealous rage. How can God grant such immense talent to such a sinner? Antonio believes that he has been a perfect servant to the Lord, who has given him nothing in return, while he gives Mozart everything. From then on, Salieri swears that he will get revenge on God and plans Mozart's defeat. How far will he be pushed? Could he even commit murder in the name of vengance?
            F. Murray Abraham is brilliant as Antonio Salieri, a man comming to terms with his own mediocrity, and Tom Hulce is wonderful as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a tortured soul who doesn't want to grow up. Overall though, the acting is perfect, or nearly so.
The writing is even better. It never relys on one-liners, but is fresh and funny even to this day. When it's funny, it's really funny. When it's dramatic, it's really dramatic. Just like a film should be. Charming, full, and tender, every human emotion, from love, lust, greed, jealousy, terror, depression, and even insanity are shown to thier full potential. This increadible movie won eight Academy Awards including Best Actor (Abraham, though Hulce was also nominated), Best Director (Foreman), and Best Picture. It also holds a spot in the AFI's top 100 Best Films of All Time list, at number fifty-three.Though it is fictional, it is based on the real life rivalry between Mozart and Salieri, and Salieri's murder confessions. It should NOT, however, be taken as a biography.
Best actor in the film: F. Murray Abraham
F.(Fahrid) Murray Abraham as both old and young Salieri. (put your mouse over the picture) >
Brilliant, powerful, and moving, Abraham's performace clearly deserved the Oscasr he won!
Best scene: The Requiem scene. A heart-wrenching and unforgettable climax to an awsome movie, this one scene is so amazing I get chills each time I watch it. A physically dying Mozart confronts an emotionally wounded Salieri, together they create a hauntingly beautiful work, The Requiem, mass for the dead. >
