The massive and extremly powerful 'Shina' corporation is mining malko (a finite earth resource) with its reactors and becoming extremly wealthy. A green-peace style terrorist group known as AVALANCH is convinced this will destroy the planet eventually and so mounts a campaign to destroy the reactors.
However one member of the group is an ex-member of SOLDIER (a branch of Shinra) called Cloud who several years earlier was nearly killed by Sephiroth, one of Shinra's finest warriors. Although Sephiroth was aldegly killed in the incident, he has none the less decided turn up again and search for the 'promised land' during which he ends up killing the president of Shinra. This is just the tip of the iceberg as the story takes many, many twists and turns...
