Zweig was fully aware that the world of his youth was gone forever, and he wanted to describe that world, the good and the bad, for future generations. While it is generally not a good idea to romanticize the past, Zweig's book forces us to recognize that, in many respects, we are less free, less cultured, and less sophisticated than our great-grandparents. I am certain I will read this book again to reminisce about a world I never knew.) 1999 The Lord Will Gather Me In: My Journey to Jewish Orthodoxy (David Klinghoffer) The Book And The Sword: A Lifetime Of Learning In The Shadow Of Destruction (David Weiss Halivni) Revelation Restored : Divine Writ and Critical Responses (Radical Traditions) (David Weiss Halivni) History of Political Philosphy (Leo Strauss) Leo Strauss and the American Right (Shadia Drury) A Man in Full: A Novel (Tom Wolfe) From Plato to Nato: The Idea of the West and its Opponents (David Gress) Literature Lost : Social Agendas and the Corruption of the Humanities (John Ellis) The Laws of Return (Cameron Stracher) 1998 The Closing Of The American Mind (Allan Bloom) The Excuse Factory: How Employment Law is Paralyzing the American Workplace (Walter Olson) Bankruptcy: A Feast For Lawyers (Sol Stein) Objections Sustained: Subversive Essays on Evolution, Law, Culture (Phillip Johnson) Closed Chambers: The Rise, Fall, and Future of the Modern Supreme Court (Edward Lazarus) Science On Trial: The Clash of Medical Evidence and the Law in the Breast Implant Case (Marcia Angell) High Crimes and Misdemeanors; The Case Against Bill Clinton (Ann Coulter) As The Driven Leaf (Milton Steinberg) Eat The Rich (P.J. Dimont) The Europeans (Luigi Barzini) Double Billing: A Young Lawyer's Tale of Greed, Sex, Lies, and the Pursuit of a Swivel Chair (Cameron Stracher) (Amazon review: As a senior associate at a large corporate law firm in Los Angeles who began his career at a large firm in New York, I can vouch for the unerring accuracy of the detail of the life of a junior associate at a large firm (right down to the smell of the Chinese food delivered late at night). Notwithstanding that every recent law school graduate appears to be an aspiring writer, Mr. Stracher is the first to actually write knowingly about the life of the junior associate. His book deserves to be read by every person considering law school and a legal career. My only criticism is that Mr. Stracher's pervasively pessimistic account, while not unwarranted, fails to give an inkling of the intellectual (and physical) rush of complex transactions and litigations that attracts a certain type of individual who is "addicted to the deal." But that is a minor criticism. Four stars.) Two Lucky People (Milton and Rose Friedman) The Indestructible Jews (Max I.
