Phase 2
Creating a Student Notebook

Objectives:

Students will create a student notebook for taking notes and exploring their ideas as they read through the novel. Especially for middle school students, it is important to give them tools they can use as they move forward in their educations.

This notebook will help students to track character, setting, plot and theme in the novel.

Instructions:

Students will need 10 sheets of binder paper to create their notebook. They are to label each page according to the table below to use as a "key" for their note taking. As I have them put this "notebook" together, I draw rectangle pages on the overhead or the board to show them where to correctly label their pages (this includes teaching them where to write the page numbers for easy access as we study the novel and how to write the page titles big and bold above the first line in the top margin).
