Benefit Festival Honoring Mika Michele Terry

The first annual Music for Mika benefit festival was held on Sunday, October 16th in Maypearl, Texas and was a complete success.  Mika Michele Terry passed away on June 23, 2005 at the age of 6 months in a tragic accident. She was the youngest daughter to Mikey and Michele Terry.   Music for Mika featured several Texas musicians and bands including Tommy Alverson, Ed Burleson, the Bart Crow Band, Joey Green and Defining Briscoe, the Kyle Hunt Band and more.  Elivs Presley was even there.  Many donations were made from local companies, donations were taken at the gate, many raffle tickets sold and a live action held making $10,000.  The proceeds will benefit the following:

A large portion of the proceeds will be donated to Kids and Cars, a non-profit organization
www.kidsandcars.org. Kids and Cars mission is to assure no child dies or is injured in a non-traffic, non-crash motor vehicle related event.  They are making tireless efforts to raise awareness by educating the public of such incidents as well as lobbying through Congress for government policy changes.  They were very involved with getting the bill passed that now requires all passenger vehicles to have inside trunk releases.  KIDS AND CARS and Consumers Unions are currently working with members of Congress to pass legislation that will direct the Secretary of Transportation to establish a database on injuries and deaths in non-traffic, non-crash incidents, to establish a child safety information program, and to issue regulations to reduce the incidence of child injury and death occurring inside or outside of motor vehicles. These regulations include a power window safety standard, driver reminder system, and rearward visibility standard. The technology for a driver reminder system has already been developed by NASA however the government needs to require all automobile manufacturers to install it.  It would be greatly appreciated if everyone would please let your representatives know it is unacceptable to allow even one more tragedy that automakers and the government can help to easily prevent. To contact your Representatives, visit the following URL and enter your zip code: www.congress.org. The proposed bill is HR 2230.  In addition to Kids and Cars, a scholarship fund in Mika?s name will be established with Maypearl ISD to help a Maypearl high school senior go to college.  Lastly, a piece of playground equipment will be donated to Maypearl?s new elementary school in memory of Mika.

Donations can still be mailed to the Music for Mika fund at the First State Bank of Maypearl P.O. Box 90 Maypearl, TX 76064.  This was  a great opportunity for the Terry family to share their story, increase awareness and raise money for a good cause all while enjoying great Texas country music.  The Terry family thanks everyone involved in making this event a success and supporting their cause.
