Ethan Rayne was the chaos-worshipping part of a
university circle that also included Rupert Giles who brought forth the
spirit of the demon Eyghon. The demon was relentless in it’s possession
of the circle, and Ethan and Giles were reunited years later in
Sunnydale when Ethan brought the spirit of the demon Janus to town to
transform the citizens into their Halloween costumes. Giles warned him
to flee or suffer the consequences, but Ethan continuously reappeared
and on separate occasions aided both the Mayor and almost killed the
Slayer when he imprinted the Mark of Eyghon on her, making her a target
to the demon before Angel killed it. Finally, after briefly transforming
Giles into a Fyarl demon, Ethan was arrested and taken away by the
Initiative to a secret holding base in the Nevada desert.
