While active in Bologna in the 1520s, Girolamo proved one of the most successful artists in the region at assimilating central Italian style, particularly from studying the work of Giulio Romano. Over time Girolamo�s early power and distinctiveness gave way to a precious and formulaic elegance. In works like this, the figures and iridescent passages recall Romano�s influence, but the description is less coordinated, the color more local, and the execution more cautious, showing Girolamo�s shift from progressive experiment toward a more conservative style.
