Girolamo da Carpi
Ferrara, 1501-1556
Holy Family with the Young St. John the Baptist and an Angel, 1540s.
While active in Bologna in the 1520s, Girolamo proved one of the most successful artists in the region at assimilating central Italian style, particularly from studying the work of Giulio Romano. Over time Girolamos early power and distinctiveness gave way to a precious and formulaic elegance. In works like this, the figures and iridescent passages recall Romanos influence, but the description is less coordinated, the color more local, and the execution more cautious, showing Girolamos shift from progressive experiment toward a more conservative style.
