Jesus quoted from the book of Psalms many times in the New Testament.  On the surface Psalms  (which means "song") was written by David and is applied to what David was going through at the time.  But, the deeper meaning of Psalms can be viewed by  what the body of Christ here on earth has been going through...it is as if Jesus himself is singing the "song" himself throughout the whole book.

There are common themes in the book of Psalms...there is a lot written about the wicked or the enemies (the wicked leaders of the church) who oppress the people of God.  They are the wicked within the kingdom of heaven who the Lord tells to depart from his presence:

(Mat 7:22 KJV)  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
7:23  And then will I profess unto them,
I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Again, Jesus tells the goats to "depart" from him because they had not spiritually fed the hungry or gave the thirsty drink to those who were in prison....the spiritually poor and needy under the unjust stewards care.

(Mat 25:41 KJV)  Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand,
Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

God gives relief from the oppression of the wicked...as Jesus says in Psalms:

(Psa 6:7 KJV)  Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies.
6:8
Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping.

Jesus will say "Depart from me...I never knew you" to the wicked....to the wicked within the kingdom of heaven:

(Psa 101:4 KJV)  A froward heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked person.

The wicked have prophesied in Jesus's name..they have cast out devils and done many wonderful works.  They preach Jesus....they build megachurches in his name and yet they bow down to the works of their own hands...they do not keep the commandments of God.

(Psa 119:115 KJV)  Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.

The wicked are unjust stewards who have kept the flock hungry and thirsty...they are poor and needy...spiritually speaking.   This is the fast that God finds acceptable:

(Isa 58:6 KJV)  Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
58:7   Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

The unjust servants instead beat those underneath them....they do not give food to the hungry or drink to the thirsty or loosen the yoke of the oppressed...but God loosens the prisoners....He gives the hungry food...He opens their eyes so that they may see.

Psalms 146:
7  Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners:
8  The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous:
9  The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.

Jesus calls the wicked in the kingdom of heaven (mine enemies) the sorrows of death that surround his saints ("me"), the sorrows of Sheol (the grave or "hell" as translated in the KJV) that surround the church. We are the body of Christ....we are the body of the "ME".  The people of God have been in the "snares of death".    The "ungodly men" is translated from "beliya'al"....this is like saying the men of  Belial....who are never mentioned in a favorable way in the bible.

Psalms 18:
3  I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
4  The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
5  The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.

Psalms 18 is an interesting psalm...it shows up in 2 Samuel 22 as well...repeated twice in the bible...it is often referred to as the song of David...could this be a way of saying the song of the Lamb?

As an interesting side note, in 2 Samuel 23 it mentions the sons of Belial...that they must be handled with an instrument of iron (rod of iron) and shall be burned:

6  But the sons of Belial shall be all of them as thorns thrust away, because they cannot be taken with hands:
7  But the man that shall touch them must be fenced with iron and the staff of a spear; and they shall be utterly burned with fire in the same place.

"Belial" means worthless, without profit, destruction.

They are compared to thorns many, many times.

(Psa 118:12 KJV)  They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.

The Lord has foretold us that the "thorns and briers" would come to the church....the tares or weeds produce fruits of thorns and briers.

(Isa 32:13 KJV)  Upon the land of my people shall come up thorns and briers; yea, upon all the houses of joy in the joyous city:

And as we know, all who produce thorns and briers are destined for to burn:

(Heb 6:8 KJV)  But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

(Isa 33:12 KJV)  And the people shall be as the burnings of lime:
as thorns cut up shall they be burned in the fire.

The Messiah comes to destroy  the wicked with  the brightness of his coming ....and it seems like sudden destruction:

(Isa 10:17 KJV)  And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

(Nahum 1:10 KJV)  For while they be folden together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.
