Tortoises                                                                         last updated September 17, 2001
These are our tortoises. We never got round to naming them. We got them when they were wee lil' babes -- you know, those cute crawly thingys that the pet shop people tell you will never grow big. Well, they grew big.
We kept them in a big cistern-like container and fed them premium shrimp, fresh from the market. They were quite contented, but we thought they should be allowed to roam about and mix around.
So we brought them to a little tortoise habitat (aka orphanage), set up in the indoor garden of our friends, Mr and Mrs Gan of Petaling Jaya. Mr Gan started keeping tortoises as a hobby. Now, he has about 20 of these shelled creatures, most "donated" by owners who didn't quite know what to do with them.
Mr Gan had made a little pond for the tortoises to wade in and eat the floating pieces of cabbages and fish pellets. There's also a nice sandy area for them to sun bathe and a covered area for those who prefer the shade. This is tortoise paradise.
This is one tortoise who got too big for its shell. But it's hardy and still going strong. Misfit or not, it has found its place in this home.
These are local Malaysian tortoises. They were found trying to cross some road some where. They have a unique rounded shell.
So there is one of our tortoises and his new-found friends. May they live happily ever after. We'll be visiting them now and then and will update you on how they're doing.
