HISTORY OF THE NAÍSCOIL

The question of setting up an Irish Language Nursery school was discussed in a number of meetings and other interested parties. A committee was elected and Naíscoil An tSratha Baín opened in September 1994. It was the first of its kind in Tyrone.

The Naíscoil offers a tremendous opportunity for young children of all traditions to learn Irish in a enjoyable way. In recent years, the benefits of a bilingual education have been well documented. It has been discovered that bilingualism helps with:

Communication skills in the two languages,

The understanding of languages in general,

The acquisition of another language (necessary at secondary school),

A level of fluency which would not be attained at study later in life.

Success of the Naíscoil still depends greatly on the hard work of the committee, Gaelphobal and Conradh na Gaeilge, the support of the parents and indeed, on the generosity of the community. We hope that with the help of everyone we will continue to bestow this gift on the young children of this town.
