Excelsior by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

The shades of night were falling fast,
As through an Alpine village passed
A youth, who bore, 'mid snow and ice,
A banner with the strange device,
                    Excelsior!

His brow was sad; his eye beneath,
Flashed like a falchion from its sheath,
And like a silver clarion rung
The accents of that unknown tongue,
                    Excelsior!

In happy homes he saw the light
Of household fires gleam warm and bright;
Above, the spectral glaciers shone,
And from his lips escaped a groan,
                    Excelsior!

"Try not the Pass!" the old man said;
"dark lowers the tempest overhead,
The roaring torrent is deep and wide!"
And loud that clarion voice replied,
                    Excelsior!

"O stay," the maiden said, "and rest
Thy weary head upon this breast!"
A tear stood in his bright blue eye,
But still he answered, with a sigh,
                    Excelsior!

"Beware the pine-tree's withered branch!
Beware the awful avalanche!"
This was the peasant's last Good-night,
A voice replied, far up the height,
                    Excelsior!

At break of day, as heavenward
The pious monks of Siant Bernard
Uttered the oft-repeated prayer,
A voice cried through the startled air,
                    Excelsior!

A traveller, by the faithful hound,
Half-buried in the snow was found,
Still grasping in his hand of ice
That banner with the strange device,
                    Excelsior!

There in the twilight cold and gray,
Lifeless, but beautiful, he lay,
And from the sky, serene and far,
A voice fell, like a falling star,
                    Excelsior!

Credit to Zach Smith for the introduction of this poem to me and the idea.  It is really interesting if you see yourself as the youth, your Christianity (or your cross) as the banner with the strange device, and your life as your journey to go higher and higher and excel (excelsior comes from the same word as excel, to gain, or to go higher).  One day our journey will end, but we will glory in it if we have held true to the idea of excelsior, going higher.
Hello and welcome to my site.  My name is Brandon.  I live in Mississippi and attend college at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, TN.  I am studying there for a B.A. in Bible with an emphasis in Youth Ministry and one in Missions.  Freed is a great place, the spiritual atmosphere is wonderful and the people there help to make it that way.  I am involed in Maywood Christian Camp, Sardis Lake Christian Camp, Regional Workcamp, and other retreats and devotionals.  I enjoy mission trips.  This summer I went to Brazil and loved it.  I plan to go back next summer.  I like to read, listen to music, watch movies, play some computer games, internet, the usual.  In books, I like  the Ender series by Orson Scott Card, the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, and of course the  Harry Potter series by JK Rowling.  In music I like just about anything.  Hope you enjoy my website and tell me if there is anything I can improve on.  Sign the guestbook :)  see ya
