Louisa County Homeschoolers
Welcome, We are a group of 13 homeschool families centered in Louisa County, IA. We welcome you to our site.
We use different curriculums from unit studies to Robinson Curriculum to Abeka and inbetween. Our strength is not in our curriculum, but in our support of each other.
WHAT DO WE DO?
During the normally defined school year of September through May, we meet at least once monthly in a group field trip. We have gone to a fire station to visit, children's museum, ballet performance, etc. This year we have scheduled to visit the Kalona Fall Festival, a local dairy, llama farm, chiropractor office, woodland foul station, "Lyle the Croccodile" performance at the University of Iowa, and others. Two years ago we had our first "Graduation/Promotion Talent Show". While we didn't have any graduates, each child who desired performed for the talent show and received a certificate of promotion to the next grade level. Last year we had our first annual spelling bee. Kids from pre-school
through 3rd grade participated (pre-schoolers for the practice getting in front of people, if nothing else). Also at Christmas, the kids will get together with one of the parents and will make a variety of Christmas crafts.
This year we will have our first International Christmas Fair. Each family involved has picked a country and will have a display booth about that country. Some of it's Christmas traditions, foot, culture, songs, etc. Each family will have a short talk about "their" country with the children each expected to participate in that talk. Visitors will be welcome and invited.
The mothers (because the primary instructors are all mothers in this group) meet every two months for a Mom's Night Out. We bring snacks and sit down and talk. Upcoming events are discussed, questions how others are doing so-and-so, book club brochures passed out, etc.
We are a very friendly group and anyone in the area is welcome to join us.
