Welcome to the Homepage of Mrs. Nancy Cowan     *Geocities is going away this summer!! :(
"The future of our nation depends on providing our children with a complete education that includes music." - Former President Gerald Ford.

"I don't think I would have become president if it hadn't been for school music." Former President Bill Clinton.
Mission: Ensure that all of my students, public or private, become literate in music.

Philosophy: Music is crucial to the intellectual development of children.  According to Dr. Gardner's (Harvard University) theory of multiple intelligences, traditional notions of IQ are too limited. Music is one of eight intelligences, and they should all be nurtured.   Even if you're not a kid anymore, learning an instrument can still be rewarding by improving your motor skills, coordination, aural perception, spacial skills, and much more (it's fun!). Check out this article about music and learning a second or third language.
Disclaimer: I teach music literacy and performance.  If you just want to learn top 40 hits, I'm not your person.

About me:
After serving in the  Army Band program for six years, I received an honorable discharge in December 2006 and obtained several jobs teaching music in the Tucson area.  I was teaching general music part-time at Continental School District in Green Valley until a dramatic reduction in force took place.  I currently play tuba and euphonium with the Old Pueblo Brass Band, teach and play guitar, autoharp, and low brass privately in Tucson.  Budget cuts are rampant this year and who knows how many music programs will survive in Tucson?

Fortunately, I got to study with some of the best low brass teachers out there, like Denis Winter, Kabin Thomas, Gerald Sloan, and have had lessons with Demondre Thurmon and Deanna Swoboda.  I also studied brass with Pat Hasty and percussion, violin, and piano at the University of Central Arkansas.  Phillip Smith was my guitar teacher at Ashley Music in Harrison, AR.  Thanks to him, I play classical styles as well as popular styles such as Rock and Roll.  Phillip was of the "
Randy Rhoads" school of thought, if you will.  I was elected into Pi Kappa Lambda in 1999, am a member of the International Tuba Euphonium Association, the National Association for Music Education (MENC), and more.  Not to mention real-world experience in orchestras, US Army Bands, and recording experience (guitar and tuba).  I have taught at public schools in Louisiana, Arkansas, and Arizona.  I like it here in Arizona and we plan on staying for a while!

Education:
Advanced Certificate in Elementary Education, PCC
Master of Music, University of Arkansas
Bachelor of Music, University of Central Arkansas
Professional Development at University of Arizona
