Stability balls or Swiss balls, as they are known, are typically thought of for use in abdominal exercises like crunches.  The ball can also be used in place of a bench while doing traditional strength exercises.  The instability of the ball forces a person to use their core muscles of the midsection to keep their body level.  Core strength is important, because the muscles of the lower back and abdomen serve as a solid foundation for day-to-day activities as well as posture.
