Resurrection Day

Mark 16:1-13

 

Introduction: Today we celebrate Resurrection Day.  The second most important day we celebrate.  The first is the day Jesus was born.  We are going to look at eleven proofs of the resurrection.

 

I.              The first proof, the sad and despairing women.  Vs. 1-3

 

A.    Several facts point to the women as proof of the resurrection.

1.     They were actual witnesses of His death and burial.

a.     They knew He was dead

b.     They knew where He had been laid

c.     They had followed behind the possession to the tomb

2.     They had brought spices and came to anoint His body

a.     They had bought the spices Saturday after 6 PM, the end of the Sabbath.

b.     They would not break the Sabbath law to take care of Him.

c.     They came very early Sunday morning to embalm Him.

3.     Luke 23:56

4.     Note.  They were very practical, sensible, thinking women, not hysterical or deceived.

a.     Their thoughts were on what to do and how to move the stone.

b.     They had seen the stone and seen Joseph of Arimathaea place it over the entrance.

c.     Also they knew where the body was and how it was laid out.

d.     The women were not mistaken or deceived

e.     Every step they took was evidence of what they had experienced was true.

f.      HE DID RISE FROM THE DEAD.

 

II.           Second proof of the resurrection – Vs 4

 

A.    The stone was rolled away.

1.     It was a round cart like wheel, and could have weighed several tons.

2.     Sometimes a groove was made and a seal applied to secure the tomb.

B.    The stone was not rolled back for Jesus’ benefit.

1.     It was for a witness of the resurrection.

2.     When He arose, He was in His resurrection body.

3.     His body had no physical bounds.

C.   The witnesses needed to enter the tomb and see the truth.

1.     THE STONE WAS ROLLED BACK FOR PROOF OF JESUS’ RESSURECTION.

 

III.           Third proof of the resurrection – Vs 5-6

 

A.    The young man clothed in a long white robe

1.     He was an angel sent by God as proof of the resurrection.

2.     God sent him for four reasons:

a.     To roll back the stone for the witnesses - Matthew 28:2

b.     To take care of the soldiers guarding the tomb –

Matthew 28:4

c.     To reassure the women – Vs 5-6

3.     TO VALIDATE AND PROCLAIM THE RESURRECTION, AND GIVE DIRECTIONS.

 

IV.        Fourth proof of the resurrection – Vs 6

 

A.    The body of Jesus was missing.

              1. Several facts giving evidence of the resurrection.

a.     The women entered the tomb

b.     The angel verified that Jesus was crucified

c.     The angel also proclaimed, “He is risen, He is not here:

d.     The women beheld, saw, contemplated that Jesus was not there.  The body was missing.

 

V.            The fifth proof of the resurrection – Vs 7

 

A.    This was the wise and compassionate word to Peter.

1.     God knew Peter was crushed, despite his repentance.

2.     He had at times loudly proclaimed his loyalty to Jesus.

3.     He had denied the Lord three times.

B.    Peter needed this personal word of encouragement from the angel.

1.     The Lord had to visit him alone first, then with the others

2.      We need a personal word from the Lord ourselves.

3.     This could have been something Jesus said to Peter.

Revelation 1:17-18, Isaiah 43:1-2

C.   THIS IS ANOTHER PROOF OF THE RESSURECTION OF JESUS.

 

VI.         Sixth proof of the resurrection – Vs 7

 

A.    This was the fulfillment of the Lord’s promise.

1.     What Jesus had told them – Mark 14:28

2.     Fulfilling His promise was proof of His resurrection

3.     Being told to meet Him in Galilee would do two things.

a.     It would stir their hearts

b.     Cause them to remember His promise and actual evidence of His resurrection.

c.     THE PROMISE COULD NOT HAVE BEEN FULFILLED IF HE HAD NOT RISEN.

 

VII.       Seventh proof of the resurrection – Vs 8

 

A.    The fright and silence of the women.

1.     They were trembling, amazed, silent, and afraid

2.     Why were they silent as they ran to tell Peter and the others?

a.     The angel had said to tell only Peter and the others.

b.     If they had told others, they would think them crazy.

c.     They feared the Jewish and Roman authorities.

3.     THEIR REACTIONS WERE PROOF OF THE RESURRECTION

 

VIII.    The eighth proof of the resurrection – Vs 9-10

 

A.    Mary Magdalene was the first one visited by Jesus.

1.     He responds to love and devotion

2.     Of all His followers, she seemed to be more devoted than any other.

3.     Her need for Him seems to have been greater and felt more than others.

 

B.    Six reasons for her devotion.

1.     She had been forgiven and healed from so much.

2.     She was at the cross through the entire ordeal. Her name was mentioned.  Mark 15:40-41

3.     She was there when they took Him off the cross and until the last moment at the burial.

4.     She was foremost in making preparations for embalming the body.

5.     She visited the tomb as soon as possible after the Sabbath.

6.     She refused to leave to leave the tomb after Peter and John verified the body was missing.  John 20:11

C.   Jesus responded to her need and met her need first of all.

D.   JESUS HAS RISEN!  HE IS PRESENT WITH US. ROMANS 8:35

 

IX.         Ninth proof of the resurrection – Vs 11

 

A.    The immediate unbelief of the disciples

1.     Here the disciples are seen failing again. Vs 14

2.     John 3:18

3.     ANOTHER PROOF OF THE RESURRECTION

 

X.           The tenth proof of the resurrection – Vs 12

 

A.    The appearance of Jesus to the two disciples in the road to Emmaus.

1.     Luke 24:13-35 – Burning hearts

2.     This was two more to go to the disciples and prepare them for His appearance.

3.     PROOF OF THE RESURRECTION, SEEN BY TWO

 

XI.         The eleventh proof of the resurrection – Vs 13

 

A.    Here is the continued truth of the disciples.

1.     The main characters with so much unbelief

2.     They were not hero’s, but tragic failures

3.     They were weak time and time again

B.    Why does the scripture paint them in such bad light?

1.     Because what Jesus said did happen

2.     Those whom Jesus shared with, I am risen, the apostles refused to listen and believe.

3.     They were without excuse

4.     How often had Jesus shared with them what was going to happen?

 

C.   ALL THIS COMING TO PAST, MORE TRUTH OF THE RESURRECTION

 

Conclusion:  Need more?  Ask Him.  He is now on the right hand of the Father in heaven waiting for you to speak.  Ask and you will receive from a RISEN SAVIOR.
